I've just stumbled upon an excellent source of steering column and gear box
information: http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com

I don't know what his background is, but he's obviously got a lot of
steering background. The site is a bit difficult to navigate because he
posts information in separate files which must be correlated to make them
fully comprehensible. But even with that situation, some of his papers are
exceptionally useful. This one, for example, tells how to correct for
looseness in the plastic column tilt ball joint -- I apparently didn't need
to replace mine but could have easily tightened it up!:

This is a link you should capture, mr.erf.

Wish I'd found it before John Nicholls and I spent Friday & Saturday
rebuilding my spare steering box. :-)
