So. My Xmas present to me is a set of aluminum wheels and new tires for the 23' coach. I'm leaning towards the cheap Cooper tires. I get a good price from the dealer, cos I buy all my tires from him. Even they will age out before they wear out. The difference in price between them and the Michelin Xrv (assuming I could find the Michelins anyway) will be more than a second set of Coopers. I've had good luck with Coopers for years, but never tried their truck stuff. Anyone have experience with them?
My 16.5 wheels will go on the PB, which currently has ten plus year old mixed maker tires. All showing cracks and crazing, and the air is showing through on one. I got a nice set of dressup covers in 16.5 to go on them. When the PB is seaworthy, I'll sell one coach or the other, and keep the 16"ers for the one I keep.

I have had reasonably good luck with Cooper tires. I had a set on my Dodge 1-ton and, other than the fact that they wore somewhat quickly, they performed well, without any kind of problem. As you stated, they will probably age out before they wear out. We currently have them on a couple of Chevys, a 1-ton utility, and a 3/4 ton.
My Dodge is a 2000 model 3500 series, V-10, automatic, chassis/cab, dual rear wheel model with an 11' utility bed on it. It weighs about 10,000 lbs and has a GVW rating of 11,000 lbs. For some reason, it is hard on tires, wearing the original Goodyears out in 20,000 miles (235/85R16). A set of BFG Commercial TAs went the same mileage before they were all but bald. I replaced them with Coopers, and they only lasted about 16,000 miles. I went back to the BFGs and got 20,000 miles out of them. They wear evenly and I am careful about inflation pressure and rotation, so I don't know what gives with the premature tire wear.

As long as different brads wear out too quickly, and they wear evenly, you'r doing too many holeshots at traffic lights :) :) 16K miles in 5 years woiuld be a stretch for me. Thanks for the info.

Ha Ha! That 8.0 L V-10 is a low end engine, redline is at 4500 RPM. It would make a great engine for the GMC, but only gets about 8 - 9 mpg even with multi port fuel injection.  With a 4.10 posi rear end and dual rear wheels, I don't light the tires up at the lights very often (like never) but there aren't too many cars that can keep up if I step on it.

If you want the "classic" look, (many small round holes) I would look into the "new" version of Eagle hub centered wheels from JimK. He says they are NOT going to have the casting marks on the front side of the wheel. They should look better than the set of "old" style of JimK's that are on my '78. If you want other styles, just make sure you get lug nuts that match both the wheels and the studs on the coach. What ever style wheels you buy, pick up seven MATCHING wheels even if you do not plan on buying 7 tires right now. You might not be able to find a matching wheel later.
As for the tires, very few of us have to worry about wear ratings. Pick ones that are round and for the most part... black.

When I buy Econolines, I normally specify the cammer V 10 in an E 350 standard length truck, with the 'rv' package which adds power windows and door locks and a genset fuel pickup. I can normally get 12 - 14MPG out of them, but they're used in the city pretty much exclusively so mileage isn't a great concern. I find the extra front money for the 350 series and big engine saves over the 5 -7 year life of the truck. We do nothing but change oil, filters, tires and recommended service. They spend hours idling, and seldom break.
The LA V-10 might go in a GMC, I suspect the Ford cammer V10 is too tall to fit.

My guy does Kumho and Michelin as well as Cooper, I'll ask... but past experience says he can get closer on the bux with Coopers.

I too have been using Coopers on my cars for years and now have a set of Discoverers on my 26'. They are 6 years old with about 15K miles and wearing fine.

Well, I got a call today with an amount which I wrote on a check and mailed to JimK's outfit. Most reasonable considering... and Nick figured a relatively inexpensive way to ship them for local pickup at the terminal. I hope to have the new good - lookin' wheels on the 23 footer before I hit out for Orlando the second week of December for the AKC/Eukanuba Championships. I'm not going to do anything in the show, but I will be at the Meet The Breed booth for Kuvaszok Saturday and Sunday if those in the area would like to meet a Kuvasz. We'll also have a BWD who was awarded - or actually will be awarded during the show - the AKC ACE award. I've also petitioned the (to date) 48 times Best In Show Kuvasz, who is a goodlooking friendly guy. Whether or not he'll attend is questionable - he may be getting the beauty treatment for the show.
Either Wednesday or Thursday night I'm gonna barbecue a chicken or three for supper - anyone who wants to join in should pop up and say so. There's a 'resolder the Onan Circuit Board' show at the same time. Participants welcome. Site 33 at the Lake Louisa State Park.

My tire guy handles Cooper and they ARE made in USA.
I have the Cooper Light Truck brochure here and in 225 75 16 E your choices are:
Discoverer H/T. Discoverer A/T3, Discoverer S/T. Discoverer S/T Maxx, SRM II Radial LT and Discoverer M+S winter. Lots to pick from with E rating . The 2 that look to have the right tread pattern are the Discoverer H/T and the SRM II. The Discoverer H/T sort of looks like a Michelin LTX pattern and the SRM II more like a Commercial TA pattern to me. Both are all season. All the rest of them are really agressive patterns for mud and snow.
