There are many companies that cater to the racing world that provide removable steering wheel hubs (Jeg's, Summit, Pegasus Racing, etc.), but most require welding or adapter hubs bolted onto the steering shaft.

George,

When the steering hub is installed, does the horn center button still work the same as stock? If not, how much modification for that? Just wandering in my mind.

Glenn,

Check out Ken Henderson's photo albums. He has a removable wheel- I think it is a Grant.

If you find the photos let us all know how you did it. I have a difficult time finding things on the photo site.

Google "grant security steering wheel". That's the device I used to make
my steering wheel removable (following Chuck Botts' example). It's the
only one I found that is DOT approved.

You'll need the Grand "Security 2000" (as it was called back then) and a
Grant adapter to fit the steering column. I got the 2000 from Jegs. The
adapter was available at AutoZone, IIRC. Total cost 'way back then was
about $120 -- more now.

The wheel must be able to bolt to the Grant adapter with 3 cap screws on an
equilateral triangle of about 2" per side. I made an adapter between my
preferrred Chevy S-10 steering wheel's 6 screws on a 3" or so OD circle.
Nothing but a disc of 1/4" aluminum with the appropriate holes and an open
center for the horn connections. Almost any Grant steering wheel would
have bolted right up; I didn't like any of their offerings, most of which
were dished.

Yes, the horn button still works.

The device cannot be used with a telescoping wheel because of the added
telescope lock lever.

The steering wheel laying on the dash probably elicits more comments than
anything else during Open House. It DOES make the cockpit more usable,
especially with the vertical accordion-fold Guske blinds.
