G'day,
When I read Paul's email below I was stunned too!
IIRC doesn't dino oil begin to breakdown / loose lubricating properties at around 260° F?

Rob,
No....
Standard dino oils are good to 305°F. But, 300°F is too high. If an oil molecule get heated to 305°F, it ceases to be lube oil - right then - there is no cooking time here. So, if he is seeing that, then places that are seeing oil primarily as a coolant - Like the undersides of piston crowns - will be destroying any lube oil that get there.
I couldn't find the PL posting.

Matt,
Thanks, the temp I found through Google was all over the place and as low as 240°F. The 260° was what I recalled from my hot rodding
days in the 1960's. Perhaps it was correct for dino oil at that time, irrelevant at this point in time, however.

Keep in mind the stock crank shaft seal is only rated to 250 degrees much higher and you will end up with a leaky seal. Which is why I used a higher temperature rated seal and an external oil cooler in series with the cooler in the Aluminum radiator.
