Greetings !!

I expect that towing a toad is in my future... We presently have a 1996 Accord but maybe a 4wd Samurai or Sidekick will follow me home someday.

My coach (1973 23') presently has a standard hitch.

And - I have a deal pending on a Roadmaster Falcon.

So:

Shall I modify the tow bar by removing the receiver insert and welding on a contraption that goes on to the ball ?? Or shall I modify the coach by removing the standard ball hitch and installing a receiver like Blaine Merrell's or Paul Bennet's ??

Thanks in advance,
Steve W

I replaced my old ball hitch with one of Blaine's through the bumper hitches, and I would recommend doing the same. It will easily pull anything you want.

I bought the thru the bumper hitch from Jim K. It came with good instructions, was easy to install, looks good and works great!

Steve,

Since I've never intended to tow a trailer, with significant hitch weight,
I didn't see any reason for a complex hitch. This one has towed a Honda
CRV (3500#+ loaded) from Key West to Bellingham, WA & 60,000+ miles in
between over the past 13+ years without a moment's problem (cost <$100)

You will never regret getting one of Blaine's from Jim. Install it and then just take it for granted. Love mine.

You need to compare the Roadmaster design with the Blue Ox.
Blue Ox does not have the ugly bar across the front and is better designed.
The tow bar that mounts on the square receiver are favored by some as you
can park it on the hitch when disconnected.
Ken H is correct about not needing to use the square receiver.
I offer free consultation on this area whether you by one from others.
I have been towing and selling towing and braking devices all over the USA

for 30 years, so I can see both sides of this issue.
I sell several brands, so I try to speak what our customers and friends
tell me.

I haul The Toadstone using the hitch on the coash as supplied, and a $50 towbar supposedly good for 5000 pounds.  The clips for the towbar are through bolted to the toad's bumpar bar behind the 'crush' stuff.  It's a '91 Jetts, and the bar is siolidly bolted to the front frame.  It follows along happily as long as I remember to unlock the steering, then turn the ignition OFF but leave the key in the lock.  I got a 'trailer harness' for 6 bux from WalMart and wired it into the stop/turn and running lights on the toad after the third time I lost a magnetic tow fixture.  It works great.  When I'm commuting or running to a show site, I coil the harness up and toss it in the trunk with a baggie over the connector so it doesn't touch anything.

Suzuki is only stopping the auto importation, not the bikes, ATVs, etc. they are selling fine.

BTW, if someone is interested, I do have the original bumper hitch available as I did replace it with Blaine's through the bumper hitch.

FWIW here is a short photo essay showing how simple it is to install a Blaine hitch.
