Looks like I'm gonna build a new dash this winter. In your opinion, what is the best, gauge out there for the money...SunPro, Equis...or what?

I'm gonna need Oil Pressure, Water Temp, Trans Temp, Fuel, Vacuum, Volts, etc.

Thanks

Larry,

I bought Nitro gauges from Harbor Freight @ around $20 each. I also have a Digi-Panel and noted that they read very close to one
another.

I ga-ron-tee someone is going to say something along the lines of "I'm not going to trust cheap gauges to monitor my engine."
However, if you think about it if a gauge is off by a few degrees, psi, or whatever it's NOT going to cause you to destroy an
engine.

Having said that I bought VDO gauges for the VW towd I'm building so I guess I'm full of it, eh?! ;-) I bought them cause they'll
look great in the aftermarket chrome panels I bought that install on either side of the speedo.

The Blue Streaks PO installed an air pressure gauge to monitor the pump output pressure.

Regards,
Rob M.

Larry,
You have a choice to make if you want mechanical or electric gauges
with senders, analog or digital readout. Having been in the
instrument business and the use of gauges both standard and precision
for 35+ years there really isn't a lot of difference between the $20
gauge and the $50 gauge when it comes to accuracy. If you want real
precision readout I can bench calibrate a gauge to .1% accuracy, but
we don't need gauges for our coaches to be that good. As long as they
go to zero when everything is off and readout to approximately what
you want it to indicate, its OK! IMPO a good mid-priced gauge is more
than sufficient to monitor the systems on our coaches. The Digi-Panel
that Jim K sells is really good you alerting you for issues that may
occur. I also have one. In the stretch coach I have a Mac dash and
it has more gauges than I every had on any of my other vehicles.
Anyway, Larry there are many gauges out there and almost all today are
made across the pond in China wether in is a low, medium or a high
price piece. Buy what you like and install and used them because you
are the one that has to be happy with them.

Like others have said most gauges are 'close' enough for everyday use. Get the "good lookin' ones as you'll be seeing a lot of them.

I thought about redoing all my gauges with www.speedhut.com. They have GPS speedo gauges and you can customize them with any logo you want. As with anything custom they are not cheap but very cool.

Hi Larry

Egauges has a wide selection.
http://www.egauges.com/

I personally like the ISSPRO marine gauges. They are 270 degree gauges.
http://www.egauges.com/vdo_grou.asp?Series=EVM
http://www.isspro.com/

The don't show a 0-90 ohm fuel gauge but I contacted ISSPRO and they do make
one.
They have a 4000, 5000, 6000, and 8000 rpm tachometers. Some are only
available in 2 1/16 inch.

I can only go off of my experience.

http://www.custominstrumentpanels.com/

To give them my highest recommendation is too little. Great products, great documentation, and knowledgable tech support from a fellow GMC owner. A full 5star rating all the way around.

I'm sure that there are other sites and places that compete on price. However, having the instruments with complete GMC specific documentation is priceless. Which wire by color in which bundle made the whole process a breeze.

Again, you can probable beat the price a bit...but being able to measure the install in hours instead of days or weeks is money well spent...

As always, just one opinion...your mileage may vary...

My problem is finding the best place to mount extra gauges. I have three 2-1/4" gauges (tach, vacuum and tranny temp) but can't really work out anywhere to mount them on the dash (maybe one up high between the main clusters, but the wheel would obscure any gauge mounted lower than that). I really don't like the "gauge warts" that stick up on top of the (fragile!) dash, and mounting them under the dash puts 'em where you generally won't be looking at them very often.

So who out there has come up with the best solution for mounting (small) gauges?

too many gauges is a sickness :>)

some orient their gauges so in the " normal" conditions
the needles all point straight up ( so they will not have to interpret the
readings :>)

I put white tabs on the Digipanel, (ala Claude)
http://gmcmotorhome.info/chassis.html#digi

so I do not have to remember what is normal

good luck

This worked pretty well but they were just scattered everywhere.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/new-dash-03-08/p24686-as-it-was-in-2003-with.html

So I made one of my own where I could put the gauges (VDO) where I
wanted them.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showfull.php?photo=24758

Lots of custom parts and a long involved process to install it all. But
that first pic shows where there is room for gauges. I'd put Water Temp
and Oil Pressure in the middle...

Mark,

A PO had installed a fiberglass panel that fits below the steering column(I think it is available from Jim K. or CurtissUnlimited).
It contains Oil Pressure, Water temp, Amp meter on the left side and Vacuum and Air tank pressure on the right side.

With the proper steering wheel(not too many fancy spokes) the guages are easy to see and read. The panel is covered with brown leather and looks like it came from the factory.

I've used it for ten years- works fine for me.

I guess there's really more room than I thought there is. I guess it's just a matter of blowing the right holes in the right area of the dash. It appears that the dash "face" is held captive by all the add-on gauges - are all the gauges hanging from the dash plastic? I'd always assumed they're mounted to the metal, but that would require some pretty serious hassle to remove the dash "face".

You won't be taking the face off of the first pic without a lot of work.

The gray "bezel" in the my custom dash is held on my magnets and pops
right off so you can access the gauge panel. I haven't had it apart
since installing it but built it to be maintenance friendly.
