Well.. not sure if this should be in the Swap Meet or here - but I'll try here first:

Anyone know of a good deal on a set of Alcoas ??

Perhaps a coach that's being decommissioned?? Excess inventory somewhere?? A restoration project that got abandoned?? A group purchase??

And yes... I'm fully aware of our community of GMC suppliers and I fully intend to support them with my business. But a super deal on a set of wheels would sure get this project started nicely.

Thanks !!

Steve,
Finding used Alcoa's with be as scarce as hens teeth, they don't
exist! Jim K bought up all the excess inventory of the alcoa wheels
he could find. He does have them on his website and he also sell the
Eagle brand wheel also which are a good looking wheel.

http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/613
This is really not a bad price as it in not much more than what they
were selling for a few years ago.

One additional comment, the wheels are available new from Alcoa, but
only as a recall replacement wheel. Alcoa no longer sells them as new
wheels. I got 7 new in the box from Alcoa last summer when I found
that all the wheels on my new stretch were in the recall range.

JR is right that "extra" Alcoa wheels are rare. But they do show up from time to time. (I seem to remember that one of the part out coaches recently posted did say "Alcoa.") But you have to be really quick to snag them. Plus, most of the time, when found, they are all the way on the other side of the country. (Added shipping costs.)

JR posted links to JimK's site with a few good options on new wheels.

If new wheels are not in the cards, you might be better off learning what makes a usable wheel and what trade-offs you are willing to live with to make not-exactly correct wheels to work. Then keep an eye out on all the sales sites and everywhere you go.

For example: I found 10 (yes, ten) Eagle wheels (a discontinued style) that will work on our GMC's.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/ed-larid/p41285-wheels-and-tires.html
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/ed-larid/p41285-wheels-and-tires.html>
They are not hub centered, but with the correct lug nuts and care when installing, they will work. I found them while visiting a small resort in Arizona. I got them for less than many pay for used steel wheels even after dismounting and disposal fees. Of course I then had to haul them all home.

By quick I mean not only seeing them first and replying first, but having the cash ready to go.

Normally if you have the last for any time, you'll get tired of waiting and watching and just go to JimK. How much is your time worth?

Stand in line with the rest of us!  A set of wheels in a fire or on a wreck will hardly stop turning before someone gloms them up.

The correct Alcoa wheels are hub centered. Eagle wheels, for the most part, are LUG centered.

BUT...

Legend has it that JimK got Eagle to make some wheels that were also hub centered. The thing that makes the legend is he had to buy the entire production run! Now that is serious putting your money were your mouth is!

I bought 6 of these "classic style" wheels but really should have bought 7.

<http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/623>

If you buy the Eagles from JimK, get the SS hardware. The lack of worrying about rust is worth the extra money. (You would be hard pressed to find 8 Stainless Steel washers for the up-charge.)

Mike,
It is probably worse than that.....
I have been in that sort of business, and
you first have to pay for any special tooling, then
you have place a large (by human standards) order, then
wait for a planned production run, then
pay for the set-up of your special tooling, then
pay the premium for your special parts, then
be ready to receive and store all the ordered parts until you can sell then.

I can be tense sometimes.

Our new Eagles will have another first.
The ugly casting mark will be on the back side and not on the front.
That is why we had to pay for 800 of them.

Cool!

That is good news!

For information: They USED to make them that way. Sometime they moved the casting marks to between the lugnuts.

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/1978-birchaven-rear-bath/p39875-hub-centered-eagle.html>

Seems someone thought that it would be OK because they would sell them with a piece of cheaply chromed tin to cover up nice polished cast aluminum. (JimK does sell a SS one that is a little improvement.)

I just ignore the marks and do not use the caps, but would like to not have the marks to ignore.

You could use a cap of this style: <http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/616>

Just a note, if you have non-hub centered Eagle wheels, there is room for the caps to put on the backside of the wheel. Like this on these much older lug centered eagle wheels:
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/ed-larid/p41285-wheels-and-tires.html>

I am proceeding, I'll have 6.  If I can suffer on a 'get-by' spare for my van, I can suffer with a 16.5 and a Firestone spare.  It need only hold air and hold the hub off the fground from the site of the flat to the tire store.  This will give me 6 good but not new 16.5s for the PB which has tired tyres and 6 new 16" ers with hardware for the Transmode.  When I finish the PB, one or the other will sell, and I'll prolly keep the aluminimum ones on whaichever one I keep.

If you buy the Eagles from JimK, get the SS hardware. The lack of worrying about rust is worth the extra money.  (You would be hard pressed to find 8 Stainless Steel washers for the up-charge.)

Mike,

Re: You could use a cap of this style: <http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/616>

According to JimK's catalog:

"Engraved "GMC" Spun Aluminum Center Cap - (1) NOT TO BE USED WITH AMERICAN EAGLE WHEEL"

I think you could use them with the Eagle hub centered wheels, however, not the lug centered.

What say you JimK?

Rob M.

Cool!

That is good news!

For information: They USED to make them that way. Sometime they moved the casting marks to between the lugnuts.

<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/1978-birchaven-rear-bath/p39875-hub-centered-eagle.html>

Seems someone thought that it would be OK because they would sell them with a piece of cheaply chromed tin to cover up nice polished
cast aluminum.

Like this
on these much older lug centered eagle wheels:

Nicer, cleaner, look... Almost makes up for the awkwardness of mounting of the lug centered wheels.

After typing the message I knew someone would mention that... But you did notice I did mention the word "style".

I do not like caps that cover the entire center part of the wheel but not cover the lugs themselves. But the castings on the modern Eagle wheels are right there on the face of the wheel just begging to be covered with SOMETHING!

Now that JimK has gotten Eagle to make wheels with the castings on the back side, there are no casting marks to cover. (At least on the new wheels from him.) So a hub cap the only covers the hole in the middle of the wheel would look good.

I do not know what about these currently available caps that makes them to be not recommended for Eagles, but a cap of that "style" would be something that looks better than the cheap tin covering the whole area around the lugs just to cover the very center of the wheels.

Mike,

I looked at these hub caps somewhere; it was either at a rally or JimK's shop. First of all they are not spun aluminum, they are
turned on a lathe.

There is a protrusion on the back that fits down into the 4.567 inch hub of the Alcoa's. I'll bet this ad was added to JimK's
catalog before he got the hub centered Eagles. The hole in the lug centered Eagles is larger than the protrusion and therefore:

Engraved "GMC" Spun Aluminum Center Cap - (1) NOT TO BE USED WITH AMERICAN EAGLE WHEEL"

If I'm correct the hub caps would work with hub centered Eagles.

Am I correct JimK?

Regards,
Rob M.
