Quick question y'all. Can I use basic rattle can spray paint to paint the
Onan generator carburetor? I don't feel like going and buying the special
paint from Cummins just for the carb.

Robin, why do you want it painted? I am sure you can spray it with a rattle can. The paint will come back off though. It wont rust.

I thought that the carburetor cleaner would take all the paint off it. with
the protective coating gone it would rust if it wasn't protected by a layer
of paint but if it does not need to be painted that's all good.

Well, I bet brake cleaner will take the paint off of it. Wait til others chime in here. I profess to be no mechanic. I could certainly be off base here.

Once I know that it runs and makes power then I will make sure that it's
all cleaned up and pretty and painted. I'm just trying to make sure that I
don't damage the carburetor by leaving it unpainted. Why won't it rust?
What's it made out of?

Well, I should have kept quiet. Thought someone would help you out here before now. Can't go out and look at mine right now. Most carbs are made out of "pot metal" and wont rust. Now, the bowl might rust so shoot it with something.

As nearly as I can tell from having sprayed a lot of Onan Green from Onan, their stuff is typische rattle can lacquer, the only thing special besides the asking price (I beg it off the tech for free) is the shade of green.

Dan,

I agree with you, the carb is pot metal (die cast zinc alloy) and IIRC when I had the carb off the Onan in Double Trouble it wasn't
painted at all, bowl included.

I have never seen a painted carb in my life. They are made out of pot metal which is either aluminum or zinc. We sometimes soda blast hem to make them pretty if that is what you are after.

Be cautious about leaving the carb in the cleaner for an extended time. I recall ruining one some time ago by leaving a pot metal carb in carb cleaner for several days. It's been a long time ago so the cleaner may have changed since then. Just something to be aware of.

On their big stuff, Onan is still in the habit of spraying Onan  Green all over the thing, trusting on grease to keep the paint from sticking linkages ans things.  The belts shed it quickly, it burns off the drive spool of the turbocharger and manifold, and flakes off other stuff like parts of the injector.  Tghe little 1 cyl ones I have had paint on the carbs, but it didn't stick.

I needed the Onan green paint to finish the housing for my Onan.
Searched the forum and some one had posted a Ford Green paint was
so close to a match you could not tell the difference.
OReilly ordered it for me. DE1617 Ford Green in rattle cans.
Looks good.

Robin,

When you are home, pull the carburetor out of the wash and rinse it long and hard in clear water, then do a final rinse in HOT water so it dries quickly. Four days on the soak, it will still be alright. The paint will be gone.

Still want to paint it?
OK, but first put it all together and run the two jet adjusting screws all the way in (gently). The idle adjusting screw needs special care as it has thread sticking out both ways. If you put just a fine film of grease on the threads and not anywhere else, the paint won't stick there. Run that in until the spring just touches. Mask the inlet, outlet and the fuel barb or flare. Put a piece of wire through the hole in the throttle arm, make it long enough to get your fingers clear and it has to have a hook to hand from while drying.

Start out holding it by the throttle shaft, this will give you better control. When you are about done, change to the wire. Do not try to get good or full coverage on the first pass. Just dust it so you do get any runs or sags. When is just about tacky, do another pass.

Most of the time two passes is enough. And, yes, the zinc die casting alloys will corrode in a moist atmosphere (like a sailboat bilge). Can you guess who may have painted the carburetors he rebuilt for client's old boat engines?

Matt
