A very nice artical in the current issue of FMCA magazine by Jim & Audree Rowe of their experiences at a car show. Three coaches from the Pacific Cruisers. Sounds like they had a ball.

Also a good artical on lubrication, page 43.

For those who are not FMCA members, you can read the article at the gmcws.org web site - the FMCA provided us with a PDF of the article and I just finished putting it on the site. My thinking here is that if you are not members of FMCA and some local or regional club then maybe we can help persuade you to join.

Every year, the third Sunday in September (22 for 2013), in a park in Ypsilanti Michigan, (the home of the last Hudson dealer) there is the "Orphan Car Show". These are all cars the nameplate of which is most suited to be an answer to a question in Trival Persuit".

There are always Edsels, Corvairs and Stuebakers, but a surprising number of others as well - more than a few that I had never even heard of before that. I have often attended, but last year and next both overlap the GMC Fall Convention. If one day it does not, I may just take the coach and see what others I can drag along.

The best car show joke I have is when I had to deliver some large signs to a friend at a local "vintage" car show. The only vehicle I could carry them in was the coach. No problem...Until I got to the gate. The entry person stopped me and admonished be for not reading the sign that clearly said "NO vehicles NEWER than 1980 Allowed to be displayed!! I was sort of stuck and told him I was delivering signed and had no plan to stay, but then I asked him how old he thought the coach was. He stepped back and said he didn't believe it could possibly be older than 1980. When I told him that this one is a '73 build and that last of them was built in 1978, he was very quiet and waved me through.

I always think it is strange that people I meet either know all about GMCs or have no idea that they exist.

A correction ought to be made to the article. The GMC did hold the
land speed record for self contained motorhomes... but a European
marque holds the current record, apparently 137mph (whereas the GMC
did 108mph).

I was just at the GS Nats last week and a guy told ne he got more thumbs up in his Grand National than his ZO6. I got a thumbs up from an S15 as I was putting the coach away post trip. I pointed down to the GMC logo on his wheel and he got it By the way the camping at Beach Bend Raceway Bowling Green Ky was quite nice and $30 a night. Not crowded this time of year of course.

Robin,

The LSR won by Dyno Sources was done in a gutted Transmode and AFAIK that's NOT a motorhome. The Germans were more original as the
article noted:

Unlike some prior LSR RV world record attempts the Goldschmitt team of Norbert Brenner, Mike Reuer and Dieter Schmitt decided to
retain the original RV interior - which is sometimes gutted to reduce weight - relying instead on improvements to the vehicle
chassis and fine tuning of the engine. These modifications remained within the statutory RV vehicle provisions required by the
German road traffic licensing authority (StVZO).

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I certainly agree that the DynoSources GMC was not representative of the
species -- didn't even have an Olds motor. I've always been a little "put
off" by that.

But I'd sure like to see something that gives more perspective to the
German coach -- every photo I've seen makes it look more like a van than a
motorhome. Are they touting it as a Class A or a Class B? More
accurately, as which would it qualify here?

Well, I answered my own question with a Google search -- It's a Class B by
the definition of anyone I know:

https://www.google.com/search?q=westfalia+%22jules+verne%22&hl=en&prmd=imvnso&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=unuKUOfvE 5Ky8ASm0oDoBQ&ved=0CDMQsAQ&biw=1137&bih=756
or

Granted, it's a nice Class B, but in no way comparable to a GMC,

Dave,
It varies from year to year, but 2010 there were only about two dozen Parkards. Some pre, some post-war and one absolutely beautiful coupe that was one of only a few produced in that configuration. I couldn't get close enough to read the whole board.

Surely, a super Mondello engine in a 23' could be competitive for the
LSR. Now, with a few bucks maybe we could find someone close to Mrs.

Ken,

Talk about demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious!

NOTHING'S comparable to a GMC! ;>)

Well at least to ANYONE that frequents this place!

3rd annual car show in Plains, GA is 10 November. I may take the GMC over
and try to win the "Jimmy Carter's Favorite" prize. Would that REALLY be
worth the $20 registration fee? :-)
