This year especially it is a good idea to check ahead for the weather. Snow is at lower than usual altitudes and has come much sooner than is typical. Crater Lake is closed. Only the low elevation roads are even open. The rim road, camp grounds and the lodge are all closed according to their web site. Be careful crossing from the east to the I-5 or going from the I-5 to the US101 anywhere in northern CA or southern OR. Both require going over mountains and/or long stretches on rural roads. The elevation changes won't bother you, but the snow - if present - sure might.

95 north out of Las Vegas to Reno is a good road mostly 1 lane each direction Tonopagh ( gold field) would be the highest elevation at around 6000 ft.,easy climb. Kind of a lonely road not much traffic. I haven't driven it past the Reno area as I usually cross over to 5 off 395 at Susan ville.at that point when I'm going to the Oregon coast. If you have never been to Death Valley I would suggest you hang a left at Beatty(374) look at the ghost town ruins in Rhyolite and continue to Death Valley for a day or two. After Death Valley come out to California 395 take it up to Susan ville (a little ways above Reno) and cross over to 5 on 44,89 unless you plan on seeing Crater lake in Oregon. 395 is higher then 95 (highest at 9300 ft in the Mammoth Lee vining area but pretty scenery and a good road. You won't have a problem climbing it as I pull my Toyota over it when I go south.
