Interesting topic. This could be like "tire wars" in which there are two sides.

I appreciate the fact that technical information can be distributed digitally. However, the weakness with the photos site is that there's no good way of cataloging or grouping the information. The superior way is to place the material by subject on a website where it could be accessed more easily.

That's easier said than done even with the information that does exist "in the wild" (Gene understands that term).

In fact, Gene wrote to a few of us asking if we'd take on that task. Honestly, I'm willing to participate in that activity but I am, in no way, willing to take it on as a single task. WS, ES, Gene's site, Billy's site, and a few other all have great information. My question is, however, who is going to take over the posting of this information after Billy and Gene are no longer able to do so. It would seem there needs to be a plan. For this reason I champion the clubs making it available and keeping it going with some perpetuity.

I do a lot of work with open-source software projects. Once a project
reaches a certain critical mass of users, it's important to ensure
that the project stays alive in the event of the departure of key
developers and contributors. The usual way we deal with that is via
the establishment of a foundation entrusted with the interests of the
project.

Maybe that model would work for the GMCNet community - instead of
entrusting individuals with the task of posting and curating all of
the information that's out there, maybe we should establish a GMCNet
community foundation with people elected/appointed to the task, and
procedures for handing the job over to the next person when the
current maintainer is no longer able or willing to do so.

Byron, I agree. The GMC resources on the net are, as far as I know, each maintained by a single individual with no backup. I don't know what the answer is but I doubt that some central control would be a very popular idea. I think a first step would be if each of the sites had an arrangement that would allow it to continue without the prime developer or maintainer.
