Good afternoon all!

Well, I put the new battery in today and after sitting for one year, my GMC fired up in 30 seconds. Whew...I was expecting to have to prime the carb and hope for the best.

Unfortunately, under the GMC is a large dark spot that appears and smells like transmission fluid. The bottom of the pan is wet so I am hoping that it is just the pan gasket that needs to be replaced. I was looking through my papers and can not find the information for which gasket would be an appropriate replacement. This is for a '76 Royale.

Thanks.

I use parfax (they're black or brown). They're $3.00 ea
probably costs more to ship to you than the gasket costs.
I have plenty in stock.

Manny,

Forgive my ignorance, what is 'parfax'?

If you are going to replace the gasket, you might as well buy a new filter and replace it at the same time. The Wix filter comes with a gasket in the box.

Farpax is a hard fiber gasket instead of cork.
Duraprene is the trade name (I think)

Thanks for the advice. It makes perfect sense to change the filter at the same time. Is there a part number for the WIX package? Does it depend on which final drive is installed? Also, is there an easy way to tell WHICH final drive is installed? I don't have the records of what the P.O. had done.

Sorry about sounding ignorant, but I find it very hard conceal!

Bob

If your GMC has a tachometer, look at the table at http://www.appliedgmc.com/level.itml/icOid/482

The final drive ratio has nothing to do with the trans filter or the trans pan gasket. I do not know the Wix number but just go get one for a 1976 Olds Toronado. Mine came from Van Senus in Highland. He had it is their speed warehouse also in Hammond but you can not buy from them so Don VanSenus will just sell it to you out of one of his stores in Highland or Hammond which are down the street a couple of miles.

You also ought to be able to find one in SBN or just call Manny or Jim K.

Ken,
Does the filter come with cork gasket or fiber gasket?
Do you remember what you paid for the kit?
Thanks

Manny it has been long enough ago that I do not remember. I since then replaced that trans with one of your rebuilt transmissions and a Ragusa pan so it has no gasket at all.

Thanks Ken,

Transmissions are black magic to me, so I wasn't sure if the final drive affected the physical aspects of the rest of the transmission. With a hurricane/perfect storm combo coming up the east coast, I think I will have to wait before I start tearing things apart, just in case they don't go back together correctly!

Manny,

WIX filter and gasket is $21.00 from O'Reilly. The gasket is a rubber like material. I used this set the last time I had the pan down. Used Permatex sealer specifically designed for AT. Claims to hold up to AT fluid when other sealants breakdown when exposed to the harsh detergents and friction modifiers found in AT fluid. Permatex Part #81180. Over 5,000 miles and no leaks. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will last.

Thanks Randy
I've been using Permatex aviation with good results. I get it in quart size.
I'll check out #81160
