I'm taking this thing to the shop. board shows 5-7 volts across the various
terminals when cranking where there should be 10 or more volts. This is
with my battery charger in full on 50 amp starting mode, with 16 volts at
the battery terminals and at the connections coming into the Onan. Pump
doesn't appear to be doing anything. Spraying ether into the carb does
nothing. There are no visible sparks at the points or plugs. Contact
cleaner did not help. I have RTFMd, WTFVd, and read everything I could
online.

Know when to walk away, know when to run.

This is beyond anything I can do myself. I'm just gonna have to point the
Money Gun at the problem.

Question: what's a brand new commercial off the shelf currently available
replacement for our Onans? I have two coaches and one Onan that may or may
not ever work again, so I gotta get at least one replacement.

Don't give up on it.
We have helped bunch of people solve problems without taking all those
readings.
Try junping 5-9 nd see what that does , then call me on our toll free line.

Buying a new board first would be cheaper than paying for some guy to look at it and tell you that your board is bad. Jim K has them rebuilt for a hundred bucks.

Thanks Jim. I've been messing with this thing for WEEKS now, off and
on. Jumping 9 and 5 causes a solenoid just upstream of the fuel pump
to click, and that's it. Pump does nothing.

I've tried everything I can think of and read all I could, but it's
just beyond me. :(

Robin,

You can eliminate that solenoid valve, though since it's working, that
should not be your problem. The fuel pump is easy to disassemble and clean
-- removing the twist lock cap on the bottom is pretty much all you have to
do to open it. Wash it out with carb cleaner and chances are it will work.
But for testing, you could just set a gas can on a ladder and use siphon
feed.

Don't give up too easily. :-)

Robin,

You are obviously literate and have an IQ well over 80 - Therefore, you are very probably more capable than anybody you will be paying to work on this. (One of my standard lines..)

Now, you may just have done your diagnosis in the line above.
The fuel system has three(3) parts.. the fuel pump (big cylindrical thing with fittings in sides above and below and electrical connection. The solenoid valve is much smaller and typically between the pump and the carburetor. It has its fittings in the ends.

The solenoid valve should click once and once only when you put the jumper in place.
The pump will click continuously - if it is working.
You may not even hear the solenoid. It is not very pronounced. But the pump is easy to hear.

If the pump is not cycling, it could easily be the internal contacts. They are easy to clean and I am sure someone has written this job up for the GMC people somewhere.

If it is cycling, loosen the fitting at the carburetor (real PITA to get at) and see if fuel is leaking out with the jumper on.
- If Not, your problem is in the fuel system nearby.
- If It is, the problem is now the ignition or the carburetor.

Test the ignition.
Pull one spark plug cap, put a screw driver into the cap and arrange it so it is near metal like 1/8" or so. Put the jumper back on and hit the start button.
Did you see a spark?
- If not, clean the points and try again.
- If yes, the problem is in the carburetor.

That may just need cleaning.

Let us know before you spend money.

If given minimum care, these things are anvil reliable and so easy to take good care of that it is awesome (in the true sense).

Yeah, well, I'd take an experienced idiot over a neophyte genius most
of the time.

Fuel line solenoid clicks once and that's it. Pump doesn't make a sound.

I have the best wife ever. I'm so frustrated (with myself and my
inability to troubleshoot this thing) right now I could just chew
nails. So she's cooking me a steak and a baked potato. She's great.

Maybe part of the problem is the fact that to work on the danged thing
I've got to drive 20 miles to Mom's house and work on it using
whatever I remembered to bring with me and without better Net access
than my iphone. In the hot weather and bugs. (I keep the Onan under a
car cover under the carport).

My thinking with leaving it in Mom's carport was that it was going to
hopefully be a quick fix, and the coaches are stored only a mile away,
so there were going to be logistical advantages. However, now that I
can see that the Onan is not going to go gently into that good night,
I can see now that I need to establish a proper shop environment. Full
access to all my tools, access to my cameras and video editing, hell
even Skype if Jim K wanted to watch me as I walk through
troubleshooting.

I'm going to put my 68 Pontiac in the driveway and give the Onan her
spot inside the garage here at my house. Wife is opposed to this idea;
there's a bad patch of paint on the hood with some surface rust and
barely any weather-stripping to speak of, so she doesn't want me to
leave it outside. With luck, and working on it every day after work,
and having easy access to tools and no bugs, maybe I can get it fixed
in a couple of weeks. Maybe.

I need a dang Bat Cave is what I need. With a lift and a service pit.

Should one have ignition problem, I found out from a friend that the points
need to be rather clean to work properly.
I was spending lot of my personal time on a unit , when my friend stopped
over and and told me straight out how stupid of a J-p I was by trying to
save a customer cost of points.
I put in a new set and it did the trick.
I think he was correct to call me a stupid J-p.
The Onan has a very weak ignition system, so it demands the best.

I have seen solenoids both before and after the pump. Before seems more common and makes more sense. (To me anyway.) A review of Robin's video shows his solenoid is before the pump. it is not NEEDED so it could just be removed. But it does have a propose... if it works, I would leave it in place.

Robin, Lawyer or not, you can figure this out. It isn't rocket surgery.

A gasoline engine need three things to run. Compressed air (with oxygen), Fuel and spark.

1.) As your engine seems to be turning over, we'll AssUMe you have compression. (But could be checked with a compression gauge.) Also, if you are breathing the same air, we'll assume it has enough O2.

2.) You say you do not hear your fuel pump running. It is most likely gummed up inside. It is easy to dissemble and clean... it isn't even that hard to put back together! Basically it is a slug the sides back and forth and a couple of check valves. If needed you can use a gas can and gravity feed the fuel for testing. But work on #3 first...

3.) In an earlier post you say that " Spraying ether into the carb does nothing." That seems to tell me you have no spark. Points are not that hard... just that due to the dual output coil, Onan points need to be in good shape. You can sand/file them clean and reset the gap. You have an advantage over most, it looks like you have the newer style points that the cover comes off the top. (The older "rear side cover" style is very hard to set unless the Onan is removed from the coach.) Just keep in mind, even when good, the spark on a Onan is rather weaker that one would expect.

Hopefully you will not have to spend much to get it to fire and run... but you will most likely want new points/plugs before depending on it. (Plus, most likely, a PerTronix upgrade.)

The best replacement generator WAS the Honda EV6010. But Honda stopped manufacturing them a few years ago. They can be found used... but at prices I'd expect from a new generator. Some have installed Generac Quietpact(?)s in 26 foot coaches with good results.

Thanks, Mike.

I just got home. My wife and one of her girlfriends with an SUV helped
me out. We caravaned to Mom's house, put the Onan in the back of the
SUV and my engine hoist into our Honda Fit (where it tore the fabric
on the back of the folded down seats. Most importantly, the Onan now
sits in the middle of my garage floor. I'm buying a sturdy 1000 pound
rated workbench tomorrow. I'll have access to all my assorted tools
and toys, and the project will be right here at home where I can
devote serious attention to it.

Where it was located in Mom's carport was only a little better than
attempting a field repair. Maybe with some climate control,lack of
bugs, and room to work with the right tools close to hand, I can make
some progress.

I sprayed ether into the carb after I took the black hose off that
comes from the air filter, with 9 and 5 jumped. Board may or may not
be bad, but to me, this screams "ELECTRICAL!" problem.

I'll shoot another video once I get set up proper in a day or three. I
have Wednesday off, even, if anybody wants to do a 5 way video skype
call and watch me and give me advice... I think I can set that up, but
I hope it's not actually necessary.

Robin,

Your immediate problem is that the Onan electric fuel pump is not pumping.

Disconnect the electrical connection to the pump. Connect the pump directly to a 12 volt source capable of at least 5 or 6 amps. It should start clicking and continue doing so until it builds up pressure. If it does not do this, remove the pump (2 lines and 2 mounting bolts) and work on it stand alone on the work bench. As Ken H. stated, it probably is stuck on the contacts inside of it are not making connection. You can fix it.

On your low voltage when cranking. You stated that you have a 50 amp power supply. I think that the starter draws more that 50 amps exceeding the capacity of your supply so the voltage is dropping when cranking. I would wait to work on this until after you get the electric fuel pump working.

Hmm. I had no idea that my 50A power supply wasn't up to it. Now I'm
worried about my little 12v lawn and garden battery, wonder if IT has
enough oomph.

I want to buy my workbench today after work and put the Onan on it.
I'll give y'all a proper walk-around and demonstrate what it does and
does not do via Youtube.

Then I'll take the pump loose and see what I can do about it, hooking
it up to the battery once it's off the Onan just to see what happens,
and try to take it apart to clean it up, see if I can make it go.
Regardless of what other problems the Onan may or may not have, fuel
delivery is the most basic and most straightforward to look at.

There really ain't one, although there are severalunits which will work.  The current Onan unit is too tall to fit.  They were going to rework it to fit a power drawer  but I haven't heard they did.  It was too rich for my blood anyway.
 
The little Generacs will fit.  KenH fitted a contractor grade of someones, there are many of those which could be fitted.  Some folks buy the Hinda, in my estimation a typical Honda - that is reliable but badly overpriced.  If I have to change mine, I'll probably do the Ken Thang, I'll have to change the air baffles regardless.

I'm taking this thing to the shop. board shows 5-7 volts across the various
terminals when cranking where there should be 10 or more volts. This is
with my battery charger in full on 50 amp starting mode, with 16 volts at
the battery terminals and at the connections coming into the Onan. Pump
doesn't appear to be doing anything. Spraying ether into the carb does
nothing. There are no visible sparks at the points or plugs. Contact
cleaner did not help. I have RTFMd, WTFVd, and read everything I could
online.

Know when to walk away, know when to run.

This is beyond anything I can do myself. I'm just gonna have to point the
Money Gun at the problem.

Question: what's a brand new commercial off the shelf currently available
replacement for our Onans? I have two coaches and one Onan that may or may
not ever work again, so I gotta get at least one replacement.

What are you trying to run/start with the 50A supply?

I don't believe that there is any way the starter for the
Onan should draw that much current! A motorcycle
battery for a Harley or other large bike should easily
spin the starter for the Onan.

Ken Burton's estimate for current draw for the Onan fuel
pump is likely to be pessimistic!

I think you are making unnecessary work for yourself
until you get the fuel pump straightened out.
