Guys,

Next week or so I am planning to remove the Onan and over the winter I would like to perform some needed maintenance. First thing I need to do is find a replacement field winding for the generator as earlier this year I discovered I have an open. JimK emailed me back then saying he has a used one available. I will need to follow up with him in the next weeks.
Next I want to remove the cylinder heads and clean off the carbon as it has over 500hrs on it. Last year or so someone here on the net provided a link to a shop that still sells head gaskets for our Onans. I thought I saved the link but I guess I did not because I cannot find it. Does anyone know of a source for Onan head gaskets?

While I have it out I will adjust the valves and also would like to repaint it. Does anyone have a source for the correct Onan paint color? Also, if anyone has some suggestions as to what I should check while the Onan is out I would very much appreciate your input.

Jon

Jon,

Say thank to Terry Taylor for:

Found 2 suppliers that seem to have some of the older parts. Was able to order the oil filler cap gasket ($4.60) and head gaskets
$9.32/ea) for my 6K from:

http://www.jackssmallengines.com/index.html

Also, parts are at:

http://www.m-and-d.com/index.html

Jon,

Here are the guys I have been dealing with for over 35 years, here in Tucson. They seem to have a good inventory of new old stock parts:

http://simonsengenerator.com/

The are kind of a low tech outfit and still have a lot of parts listings on microfiche, but they always seem to have what I need.

That said, Steve Ferguson has always recommended just reusing the head gaskets after cleaning them up and applying a few good coats of aluminum spray paint. Matt Colie will probably echo that advice, maybe even without the paint.

Jon,

I know what you have been told about gaskets, but most of it simply isn't true.

If a head gasket isn't leaking and does not get damaged during disassembly, then, put it back between the two casting is was between before and pull the fasteners to the correct tension. It will work as well (or better) than it did before. Think of it as a re-torque after thirty years.

This is true of all gasketed joints.

If your coach is as old as most, the head gaskets are asbestos filled copper and very durable. If you are truly worried, put a little grease or Hylomar (non-hardening) on the gasket. It really won't help at all, but it also won't make the gasket stick so it does get damaged the next time.

Onan has the 'Onan green' paint available in spray cans.  I don't know what they charge for it, I usually beg a can off the maintenance tech when he's doing PMI on our big sets, and touch up the rust with it.  All but one of kine are in oputdoor housings, and nee the wire brush and spot paint treatment every year or so.
