Of course you're having problems, it's AOL. I wish I could get my brother to switch, then he would actually get all my emails or be able to open the attachments on those emails he did get.

You might check the battery.

My friend Gary has a 1978 Eleganza and is having problems with his alternators. He gets about 1500 miles and the alternator gives up. He has replaced 5 so far and we are kind of curious what we should be looking for.
Any ideas greatly appreciated

We really need a little more information about the failures. How does it fail? Is it mechanical or electronic? Are you sure the alternators are failing and it is not a bad battery? Does both the house and engine batteries have a problem? What is the output voltage measured at the center post on the isolator when it is running correctly and when it is failing? Where is he getting the replacement alternators?
See if you can get some of these answers or have him post directly. It is very unusual to have 5 bad alternators. I do not care who the supplier is.

GMCWiperMan wrote on Sat, 25 July 2009 23:47 | Ken's right -- more data's needed. But as an educated WAG, I'll bet he's
got a bad isolator. Probably opening the engine battery side when hot. By
the time the alternator's replaced, it's cooled down and working OK again --
until it gets hot again. The next time it fails, put a jumper wire from the
engine battery side of the isolator to either of the other two terminals and
see if the alternator begins to work. He may have never had even one bad
alternator.

Great idea. I forgot about that one.
We really need voltage readings to tell what is going on.

Some how the brakes must heated up and the moisture in the system created a
air gap.

Finally got to jim k's then drove sharon and girls to a mall 20 minutes away. Brakes went spongy a couple times then back to jims. We went over a number of things and got a couple resolved. I was going to drive back to get thje family but when backing out the brake pedal hit the floor. Looks like the master cylinder. Good thing we were in jims compound and not on the freeway. Rick Flanagan came along and drove me to pick. Up the girls then back to tjhe coach then to a hotel. Thjankyou Rick. Work to continue tomorrow. Regards.

I was working with Patrick on the mailing list - with some luck we'll squash the SPAM and things can get back to normal!
It may be up/down in the next little while until we can sort out exactly what happened...
