Rob, thanks for getting this transaction done. The windshield is now in the custody of Tom.
My granddaughter is doing good after second round of chemo.
Shrinking big time, over 50%. They will operate in 4-6 weeks.

Dan,

Thank YOU for helping Tom.

More importantly the news of your granddaughters progress is heartening, between St. Jude's and everybody's prayers soon it will be
100% gone!

BTW I can't remember if you told us what her name was and if you did my CRS caused me to forget it.

Rob, our 2 year old granddaughter's name is Effie Lynn Gregg. She is the youngest of 4 that belong to our son over south of Nashville, in Spring Hill. Our son works for Dave Ramsey, in Brentwood, who is paying him to stay at the hospital, with our granddaughter, for as long as it takes. Our family has been blessed through all of this and we thank all of our GMC friends for the thoughts and prayers. And, Ken, yes you shared with me as did Teri. Thanks.

Dan, I've been following Effie's progress on Facebook. I'm glad to see that she's doing better. Dave Ramsey is an awesome guy and evidently an awesome boss.

For those who wonder, St. Jude's is a groundbreaking hospital which is deserving of your support.  Last Spring, we raised some several hundreds of thousands of dollars for them via our stations.  One of my BWD friends, Dr Kathy Knapp, is a pediatrician there.  They have made incredible strides in treating cancers in children, and have turned some from 'death sentences' to treatable and curable conditions.
Back in the 80s, the idea of St Judes Radiothons began.  Danny Thomas came down to our Atlanta station, and did a lot of air work as well as took phone calls for the day.  He was taking a break in the lounge, and I asked him how he'd decided to become so invloved in pushing his pet charity.  He said he'd been at the hospital talking to patients and doctors, when one surgeon excused himself with the comment "Excuse me, I have to go watch a kid die."   He said the shock of the comment and the obvious pain the surgeon showed helped convince him to do all he could to correct the situation.  Fortunately, his legacy lives on after him.  When yall condsider supporting good works, St Judes is truly worthy of your donations.

Johnny,

Whatever happened to entertainers like Danny Thomas and Jerry Lewis? They used their celebrity to champion wonderful causes.

Now-a-days we have the Kardashians and their ilk who champion THEMSELVES!

They may be famous but they're assholes! Pardon my crudity!

Rob:

And all the people who did great things with Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Civitan, churches and other civic organizations?

They died.

We have more 90 year olds at my Rotary Club than we do 20 somethings.

The baby boomers and the tail end thereof (my generation) are barely represented as well.

For some reason no sense of giving.

If not you, who? If not now, when?

I have some hope this is starting to turn around. Just recently at the railroad museum we have been getting younger volunteers. We have two mid twenty's that have been around for a few years that we have put on our BOD just because they understand all the social media stuff and how to use it. (us old farts have no clue.) Just yesterday we had a 17 yo volunteer show up. We have a few others. There is a very big gap between 30 and 50.

Actually, and to me surprisingly, a lot of the hip-hop artists do a lot of charitable work and put a lot of money into it.  (One of our stations is screaming hip - hop kid appeal.  LEt your pants down).    Of course, some of them also are like many rockers totally selfcentered.  I think taken as a whole, the country music genre is the smoothest and does the most charitable work today.
Mind, I'm attuned to singers, not actors for the most part.  However, there were those who did the USO tours with Hope et al, and some very significant ones who didn't.
We're into the third generation of Americans who feel 'entitled'.  In my biased opinion, the country is much worse for it. They need to learn the satisfaction of working on a GMC and making it into their personal statement, as opposed to having Daddy buy them an SOB cos it's new.

I recommend a book by Dr. Frank Pittman, a pshychiatrist I've known since I was 5 and he was 12, titled "GROW UP!"  It's a quick read, and he touches on the problem.  Available in paperback.

Exactly - I spent about 1-1/2 hours walking him and his father (father had to come with to sign permission for him to be a member) around our car barns and climbing on the cars. Then invite them to lunch with the volunteers (museum provides lunch for the volunteers. Nothin fancy just sandwich fixins.)

We have become aware that we actively have to recruit volunteers. The days when they just showed up on their own are over. We need to make them aware we are here and they are welcome to come and "play" with us and the trains. (All our stuff runs or is under restoration, no static displays.)
