I am in Fla and Jeff has seen the coach already.I just meant where to look for a battery killing short.I just assumed there were things that fail more than others.

If it is your engine battery that is going dead then consider this the same as working on any other car of the 1970's vintage with one added component. that component is the isolator. The isolator is a nothing more than a diode in line with the alternator charging lead.

So I would shoot the problem looking at the obvious things first .

1. Water in the battery
2. Loose or dirty connections (primarily on the battery cables)
3. Alternator not charging
4. Bad isolator
5. Something left on draining the battery
6. Bad battery

Time to get out the meter and start looking.

1977's should have a spring loaded boost switch on the dash, but mine will occasionally stick on boost. If it does so, the load of the boost solenoid will run down both the house and starting batteries.

a poor aftermarket radio installation that doesn't shut off with the ignition switch will drain the battery down.

I hate chasing shorts.

I'd:

- Charge the batteries first.
- Check the alternator
- Wait till after dark and pull the ground cable on the engine battery. If there is a drain, you should see a spark.
- Start pulling fuses and checking to see which circuit has the drain. Once you've ID'd the circuit, you can start tracing.

Horror Freight has a cheap short checker or you can order them online.

Please update your location and put a name in the signature. We like to call folks by a name...doesn't have to be your name but something besides 'hey dude' Laughing You can do all this in the control panel button above just below the banner add.

A basic test light probe would be the first tool to get going. Loosen one fuse at a time in the glovebox and see if you get a light between the loose leg of the fuse and panel. When you say dead do you mean engine and house? Meter across the batteries engine running to see if you have 14V or so.

Jon,

Your ElectroLevel should receive all of its power only from the Aux. buss.
A PO probably moved the main feed to the Battery buss so he didn't have to
turn the key to use the switches.

Oh,My daily driver is a 67 Eldo with a Built 500 and the SP trans!!!

Well Anthony,

Welcome to the group, family, cult or asylum..

This is the first place to go.

Before you get very far, go into the control panel and set a sigfile that has a real name, coach description and a geographic reference. This is so those here that want to and can help, know who they are talking to, what they are dealing with and where you are so they know what resources you have access to.

About the engine battery draw-down.
Do You own and know how to use a meter?
If no, go get at least a cheapy at like Harbor Fright, or Ebuy.
If yes, we have a chance here.

First, with the battery charged, disconnect it and measure its voltage. Let it and hour and measure again. Then, let sit as long as you can and see if the voltage has fallen any amount you can measure. If it has, the battery is probably toast.

Second test.. Get a little light bulb and attach two wires with clips on the end. Put it between the battery and the cable. It should not light. If it does, then you have just proven that you do have a drain. So, start pulling fuses until the light goes out. If no fuse makes the light go out, you have some real problem that may take considerable skill to locate.

Lastly, you will find that the coach becomes more a part of your life than just another toy or vehicle. It is more like a boat is to watermen. That is why I like to welcome new owners in a similar manner to that. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

Welcome Antony

Matt

As I understand it, (and my tw coaches bear this out) the Transmode has a two position switch which stays where you put it, while the Motorhome has a spring loaded switch which must be held in Boost.

If the compressor(s) are wired directly to the battery, as opposed to through the ignition switch, and you have a slow leak in the air system someplace (not at all uncommon) the compressor(s) will cycle on and off as needed and eventually drain the battery.  Chase some wires, and see what's hooked up where.

Anthony,
You should add a signature to your emails to this group. It is a
great value as it would tell us what year and coach you have a where
in the county you live. This helps in giving you correct information
when trouble shooting or other and where the nearest service is. I
would suggest the following as a minimum.

Anthony
Any coach
Any location

Good luck on your new coach and welcome to the GMCnet.

Hi Anthony

Where are you trying to upload the picture to?

The GMCnet email server does not accept attachments, but there is a photo
site dedicated to classic GMC motorhomes.

Check it out at http://gmcmhphotos.com/

There is sign-up information near the bottom of the page. Here is a direct
link.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/register.php

J Harper has a photo collection that explains the steps required to upload
your photos.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g4782-how-to-upload-photos.html

Good Luck

First of all your Facebook link worked fine.

Second, There are two kind of users here. Some use an archaic text only email system to view GMCnet and some use the web based forum. The text only email users can not see any photos posted to the web based forum. So to get around that problem and to also provide a trusted archive site, a 3rd site was setup. This site is www.gmcmhphotos.com. This site will serve the same purpose and can be linked to in the same way that you did to your facebook page.
