While were on the subject, what steps should be taken to find out why my cruise control doesn't work. All I've done so far is verify that I have a good ground as someone once suggested.
I see I can buy a new transducer, but other than the obvious, how do I know its bad? Thanks

Check the vacuum lines and the dump switch on th brake pedal bracket. If the dump valve is open or broken it won't work... and if there's no vacuum to the transducer it won't work. Beyond that, a rebuild is probably in order.

I had several issues with my cruise control. First, it was intermittent. At Ken B's suggestion, I ran a ground directly to the rear of the left head. That helped. Next, I tore a hole in the servo (the round black thing with a rubber diaphragm that operates the throttle) while doing a hasty roadside ignition module change out. Got a good used one from Jim K. Fixed that. Next I replaced the transducer with a Jim K. rebuilt unit. Now it was nice and steady after making a few adjustments to the vacuum nipple. Next, the stalk mounted switch gave up. I borrowed a known good one from my mechanic friend for diagnostic purposes and verified that it was bad. I mentioned this on the Net and Jim Decheine came through with one for me (for free) that he removed from his '73. Now, it finally works perfectly.
Probably a lot more hassle that just replacing it with a modern Rostra, but a lot cheaper and it it works satisfactorily.

To add to the above, it seems like every time I am under the hatch for something I knock a vacuum line off of one of the cruise control connections, usually the servo. I have learned to check those connections now, every time, right before I close the hatch. I suppose I could just put a better clamp on the hoses to prevent this from happening.
