Bill,
I do know of a guy that was very close to Alex Birch and did get a lot
of the parts when Alex cleaned out his basement. I got some of the
original plastic door moulding to replace the damaged stuff on my 1975
avion with a Birch door from him. I will see him in a couple of weeks
and I can ask if he has any hinges. Other than that, no one else may
have any, but there is always that chance. Alex made the hinges
himself so that was the only place you could get them from.

The hinge is pretty complex and unless you have one to duplicate a
picture will not be much help, but here is one anyway.

Hey JR, while you're at it, could you ask him if he has any more of the plastic molding. Mine is damaged as well.

Thanks!

pardon me for mentioning this again, RE; screen door design vs west nile virus

I need screens for my old type roof fans for my 77 palm beach, any ideas where to get them?

here is my new screen door.

http://www.asseenontvvideo.com/512450/Magic-Mesh-Screen-Door.html

THis screen door above costs $20 and it can save your life. West Nile is killing people even in Fullerton Ca. here.

THere is no bugs here and it is happening. about 3 people have died. I talked to a family on my shuttle in canada and

it is up there as well. Just keeping the eye on the ball here when it comes to screen doors. Magic mesh is easy to hang and works great.

i got one for $12. Until i can get a better one.

9:46AM EST October 11. 2012 - Your Thursday morning health roundup:

West Nile update: This year's West Nile virus outbreak is now close to being the second largest on record, but the number of new cases is continuing to drop as autumn sets in, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. Officials reported 280 new cases and five new deaths, bringing the totals to 4,249 cases and 168 deaths. There were just 20 more cases of the mosquito-borne illness in all of 2006, but the largest U.S. outbreak was in 2003, with 9,862 cases.

That looks good, but when I got one of those for my coach, it took two days to stitch in the pleats, tucks and gussets that it needed to and then stitch and stick the Velcro all the way around so it would fit the coach's tumblehome. We like it, but if a Birch door had been available, it might have been a better choice.

You got off easy. Took me way more than 2 days to fit a Birch Door to my coach, including Bob Burkitt's help. Without his help I probably would have destroyed the thing long before I got it to work nicely. Of course, now that it's on, I love having it.

Rob -- even after i got home I worked on that thing for hours and hours more before I got it the way I wanted it. With the age and sag of coaches, and the various ailments the doors have picked up over 35-40 years, it's just no easy task to get a screen door on. But they are just incredibly worth it once you get it done.

Alex always allowed a LOT of time to install one of his doors! For us, we
only do it a couple of times...

I bought a used Birch door in 2000 in preparation for our trip to Alaska
(home of swarms of Eagle-sized mosquitos). After solid week of my life
making it fit well enough for me and a boy to slam the entry door shut, we
made the trip (and saw almost NO mosquitos).

It came off and went to the next lucky sucker as soon as we got home.

Ray Erspammer had found some. I don't know if he still has any available.

Steve,

IIRC Ray found a "substitute" for the OEM Birch plastic molding.

Definitely a substitute. Bob B. uses the original, which is an off white hard plastic that he modifies one section to get around the latch mechanism. Ray uses a flexible, black, soft rubber trim that flexes around the latching mechanism. I believe Ray's is slightly more expensive than Bob's. I tried both on my coach and ended up preferring Ray's. Since it is flexible, it has some give where the door pushes on it. Before I got the Birch just right, I had to slam my door a bit hard to get it all to close. That caused the hard plastic trim to crack in areas where the fit wasn't quite right. The soft rubber trim was a little more forgiving. Plus my wife and I preferred the black color to the off-white. The black is also wider, so it seems like it got a better seal.

Just my 2 cents and your mileage may vary. Both attach the same way with the same ease of use.

Thanks,
