I've read the threads on the original post and was reminded of the things John and Rob have pointed out.

My biggest criticism of this wonderful area on the internet is that frequently people will reply to a real problem with all kinds of prattle or nonsense. Only a few of you really read completely and reply accordingly. Those of you that do are my heroes. Thank goodness for the heroes. However, the rabbit chasers are fun, too, but you have to not be stranded to appreciate the humor.

We actually have a lot of different issues here.
We have a brand new to GMC owner.
We have a sequence of events with no definitive time line.
We have an owner on the road without experience diagnosing GMC issues.

He got it home safely with no additional damage.
That is what really matters.
He is now in range of solid local support.
He is about 18 miles from me.

We have been talking on the phone and confirmed that the isolator is open, but it was by passed.
He has not succeeded in firing the APU.
He believes that the house bank is dead.
He believes that the alternator (replaced recently) may be non-functional.

We will let you all know what happened.

Matt

Matt, I'm glad you are so close and able to assist him. Don't want him to become discouraged because of not knowing the most logical items to address first. Without an isolator the house battery is probably discharged. When he gets the start battery charged, it will be a lot easier to diagnose. If the sequence of events is other than he described then the troubleshooting steps could change.

I can tell you from our last conversation that he is not the least bit discouraged. He has dealt with old vehicles and such, and went into this knowing that there would be issues that need to be addressed.

OK. Time for Rob Mueller to put together an "electrical troubleshooting
flowchart" with branch circuitry doing the old "pass/fail" routine.

This reminds me of the lady that called the helpdesk because her monitor was
"not functioning". You know the rest of the story -- she could "see" to tell
if the cable was connected to the back of the CPU because the power in the
building was off. By the way, the helpdesk person never found out what color
her roots were. I know what I'll be on.

Byron,

I would love to do that BUT I am seriously ELECTRICALLY CHALLENGED!

I can figger out electrical problems BUT I have to be all alone, in a quite place, and REALLY concentrate!

For some reason the part of my brain that is used for electrical problems never developed fully! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,

I understand. Electricity is an exact science. It's all the stuff we hang
from it that ain't so exact.

My problem is that I can't read flowcharts anymore. That's a skill I chose
to forget when I became a part of the lazy, irresponsible 47%.

Byron, hoping you remember how to get back into Australia.
