Okay put on the new Thorley header with their gaskets and still leaking. It is only getting worst so I ordered the thicker Remflex gaskets and getting ready to get them on. I hope this cures the backfiring that started after the leaks. The gas tanks are down now and cleaned. I have new senders ready for new metal gas lines. I think I will be using rubber gas lines to connect them but get rid of as much rubber as possible. I am still trying to decide if I am going to cut holes in the floor or not. I hope to get it all back together and be able to finally drive her up to speed with out and sputtering or cutting in and out. Wish me luck and thank everyone on the board as it is so helpful!!!

Charley, those tick Remflex gaskets stopped my header leak.
Now, if you cut holes, and I hope you do, give us pictures and details. Lots of guys are watching. I, for one, am planning to cut holes.

The good news for me as my edgemont 1976 underneath where the tanks are there are precut through one layer of the floor where the senders go. I am not sure if all GMC are that way but should make cutting the holes a little easier as where they need to be. It will be hard to cut through that nice new floor I put in. Sorry I did things backwards as I restored the inside first and broke the rule of not gutting the whole interior before using it (started one area found mold and just gutted it and refoamed her from front to back). I will definitely be taking pictures as I wish I had taken more through all my restoration.

Charley, our 74 has those recessed places also. But, I am not sure they are centered over the senders. I have been told that they are not. We have fairly new hardwood flooring in our coach so I dont want to make a mistake when I cut the holes. There are measurements on Gene's site for cutting them from the top. Not sure Which way to cut, from top or bottom.
Will be watching you.

On my '74 the 1" thick plywood floor has reliefs routed out approximately where the senders are. After doing some checking it appears these recesses are NOT over the sender but are offset somewhat to be centered over where the hose connections are made. I assume this is to make sure the floor does not press on the tubes and hose connectors where they come out of the sender plate.

Those holes do not match your senders

Use them to mark the center but cut hole from the top with tanks in place

Double check those indicators, Charlie. My rear one was right on but the
front one was off by about 1.5 inches. Measure twice, cut once. :-)

That is what I thought. Will get measurements from Gene's site and cut holes from above. I have been sitting on the parts for 2 years now. Need to get this done, one last time. That is why I am thinking a group "party" with others of likemind might be in order.

Dan,

Here's a way you can get the holes EXACTLY where you want them.

1) Drop both tanks & remove the sender from one of them
2) Make a round 1/4 inch thick wood block the size of the recess the sender sits in
3) Drill a hole in the center of the round wooden block
Note: you could offset it if you so desire
4) Sharpen the end of a 3/4 inch 10/32 and screw it into the round block
5) Attach the block into the fuel tank using the sender screw holes
6) Raise the tank into the AUX tank position
7) Press the tank upwards so the screw can mark the aluminum sheet
8) Lower the tank and drill a 1/8" hole up through the aluminum sheet, foam insulation, and the plywood floor
9) Repeat the process for the MAIN tank
10) Drill a ? inch hole down through the floor using a hole saw or fly cutter
11) Using a router cut a recess 3/8" wide around the hole
12) Make a stepped plug to fit in the hole

Regards,
Rob M.

Good thinking. I too have thought that might be a sure way to get the hole where I want it.

Yes Rob that sounds like the way to go as I hope to get these cut the next couple of days and will keep everyone posted. I have hardwood floor as well so it will hurt to do it but I think it will be best to have it done in the long run. When I foamed the inside I just used the insulation sheets from Lowes with the silver and white cut to fit and filled with "Great Stuff" foam sealant then tape all up with the aluminum tape. Hope to get it down to Humble so you can check it out.

Charley,

Fix the backfiring before installing the Remflex gaskets. Those work
great, but the material is not strong, and the torque setting is low, so
they DON'T like backfires.

I think the back fire is because of the leak. It has all new exhaust and only does it when you let off the gas. I have aluminum intake so no crossover also given her a complete tune up new wires, plugs, cap, rotor, ignition module and coil. I will be checking on all these just to make sure nothing is a miss. Anything else that you can think of??
