I took the GMC out for a test run today before I drive it 48 miles to
Orlando
Monday to get it painted. I have about 2 miles on the complete rebuild. The
"engine water " idiot light on the dash goes on as soon as you turn on
the key and it stays on. also the temp gauge stays near the C, it didn't
really
move after the engine was warm. I'll replace the temp sensor that is on the
front left side on the intake manifold, But I don't know where the idiot
lite is
getting it's power from. Is it also coming from the same sensor?

That radiator low water light is getting its signal from a probe that is located on the back side of the radiator in the side header. It is down a few inches from the top if the radiator. If its unplugged it might read all the time.

Mine used to come on shortly after start up but would go off after running for a while. In my case I found that even though I thought I had the cooling system full I did not. I kept adding coolant to the recovery tank and eventually it did fill up and the indicator no longer comes on. BTW, I never did have a problem with overheating.

Larry,

Congratulations. I'm glad to hear you've finally gotten on the road.

The low water sensor is about half way up the right (passenger) side
radiator tank on the back side -- it's just an insulated probe into to the
tank. It's difficult to gravity-fill the cooling system because of the
HVAC heater core being located several inches above the radiator. Unless
you use a pressure-fill system, as I do, it usually requires 2-3 engine
heat/cool cycles, with refilling of the radiator overflow bottle after each
cool-down, to completely fill the system. That system is completely
independent of the temperature indicator and depends on a small "ice cube"
module under the dash.

The OEM water temperature sender was not well chosen -- it indicates <1/2
scale when normal and 1/2 scale at overheated. Replace it with a sender
which better uses the gauge: go to
http://www.gmcmotorhome.info/engine.html and
scroll down to the "Temperature Sender" topic for a discussion and part
number.
