[GMCnet] GMC Inspired Motorhome in Irelan [message #186460] |

As some of you know, Debra and I and Manny & Deo Trovao and
several GMC49ers and Western states folks have been on a
tour of the UK and Ireland. When we stopped in Waterford, IE
and the ladies discovered the Waterford Crystl showroom,
Manny and George Banovich and I spotted this perhaps GMC
inspired Hymer B 745 Tag Axle motorhome across the street,
so we had to go investigate.
Fortunately for us, the owner, Richard, was there and we
were able to get a tour. it is powered by a transverse
mounted 3.1l 4 cyl. Fiat TDI diesel and has a 5 speed manual
gearbox (Manny was REAL excited about the driveline!)
Richard was most accomodating to a bunch crazy American
tourists.

Sounds like the power plant originally proposed for the Vixen. Then
they found out it wouldn't be in production until a year after they
needed it, so they ended up with the BMW 6.

Take a look at European motorhomes and you'll see several different models
with FWD and tandem rears. Some on the Ducato chassis and some on the Ford
Transit (not the Connect) chassis. Several are just longer versions (with
tandems) than their counterparts with a single rear axle. Though tandem
rears, they aren't mounted on a bogie, of course. They should ride like
those converted to the four-bag systems.
If you want to see a sexy moho introduced in 2009 check out this video on
You Tube. Look at the Bürstner Elegance.

Or, check it out at their website.

Apparently slide outs aren't so popular in motorhomes of this size yet.

Very interesting coach. The one in the 4th URL
that is for sale lists a 2.8 L engine. I'd expect
that would be around 150 HP if turbo-charged.
The right rear corner bed is used in quite a few
US RVs, powered and towed. I'd expect it to be
a problem during the night for those of us who
have a personal "fluid storage" problem!
All in all, an attractive piece!
