OK. So why are tachs so spendy??

I want to put a tach in my gmc. mainly to figure out what final drive I am running. and also keep a little better eye on the shift points.

I have seen tachs on ebay for $25.00. but most go for well over $100 bucks.

I want one that probably only goes to 4000 rpm.

I have automotive test meters, that have tachs on them, that I only paid $5 for.

just a simple digital readout would work for me.

What is so fancy? I do not want to buy cheap and get something that does not work. but I do not want to pay $125 for something I rarely look at or pay attention to, when I could of spent $30?

Where are you mounting this tach? Maybe you don't buy a large one.
You will barely use it and it will take up a lot of space on your dash.

Buy the small one (2-18"?) with the lowest redline you can find. Mine is
4000 rpm.
I drive a lot more by the vacuum gauge than the tachometer.

My dash layout, with the most watched gauges (Oil and Water) right on
top with Vacuum to the left and Tach to the right.

I bought an inexpensive Sun which is like 2 1/2 or three inches.  It goes to 4K RPM because I set the switch to 'four cylinder' and removed the dial, took off the numbers, and used ruboff numbers.  Works great.  Next time I'm home when it's light I'll take a couple pics.  I think it cost me 29.95 or so at Advance Auto.  Plugged the sense wire into the "TACH" connection on the diostributor.  Fat city.

Jon,

Look at item 290606353066.
I have one and does what you want.
Now it is easy to tell if it is in second or the fan clutch is on again.

thanks Matt. that is perfect, and pretty cheap for what it is. Just ordered one up.

there are a few other uses I can see for that as well.

those are my goals. get a general idea what is actually happening with the motor vs what i think it sounds like. and maybe figure out what my final drive is.

I have 2 tachs Smile

OK one is extra..
The extra one is a steering column mounted Sunpro, worked well, but I wanted on in the dash, so I got a harbor freight 2" tach and a vacuum gauge in dash now. That dash is some thick metal!

The sunpro was cheap, like $30
