I have this thing about information and/or training. I've lived by it for
a long, long time. "Freely you have received, freely give". I take Matthew
10:8 very seriously. I've had open access to a lot of information since my
first job as a hospital employee. I worked with many people who were
willing to show/tell what they knew. I also worked with a few that didn't.
Guess which ones I appreciated more.
I also have this belief that "we go farther faster when we cooperate."
To be honest about the presentation it was Fred Hudspeth who suggested I
do it. I responded to a post he made here.
If I were still driving the 78 Royale I probably would still be wondering
about the advantages of a backup camera/monitor and TMPS. Only after
getting into a diesel pusher did I understand the advantages regardless of
size. As I pointed out at Amana, I consider both systems as cheap
insurance. The rear camera pointed at the horizon give such a better view
of what's behind that it's hard to imagine driving without it. For
instance, if you're in the left lane of a three lane road you can actually
see someone in the right lane signaling to move into the center lane if
you just ahead of them by 30 feet. To me, that's the ability to avoid an
accident or causing one. As to monitoring you tire pressure/temp -- you'll
see the potential for a problem ahead of the problem. Now, like insurance,
you may never need it. But, like insurance, it's good to have just in case.
TPMS gear started out as being helpful to drivers of 18-wheelers who can
hardly hear blowouts and only see them if they're looking back. Of course,
you know what happens to the driver that doesn't know of a blowout; the
trailer winds up burning. Unless the cause for a blowout is an external
puncture 90% of the time you'll see the temperature raise and/or the
pressure change beyond 20%. At that point you pull over and let things
cool down. In fact, I did that once this summer traveling north in Arizona
toward the North Rim. After pulling over and waiting five minutes I was
able to continue safely. I'd hate to think about driving on ignorantly
and, perhaps, having a blow out half way to Marble Canyon. Indian beads
would have done no good just as limping on five tires wouldn't.
