G'day,
Ken Burton asked me to work with the guys that were installing the windshields since he was delayed due to his radiator problem;
naturally I accepted.
A three bay garage (HEATED) garage had been organized as a location to R&R them. Ken Detterling and his team arrived Saturday
morning, and got stuck into the first coach at bit after 7:30 am. They wanted to accelerate the program so we got the next person in
line to bring his coach over at around 8:30 or so.
They wanted to do that because they would only change one windshield at a time because if both are removed the cap can shift and
they don't want SHIFT happening in location away from their shop!
Things went smoothly until one of the new windshields broke during installation. I don't know what happened as I wasn't there when
it happened.
I had used butyl rubber to seal the gap between the windshield rubber seal and the coach on the top and sides. The windshield team
used black silicone RTV so I had to get it all out. Doing so was one hell of a project! I came to the conclusion that butyl rubber
was OK for the side windows but I wouldn't use it on the windshield again.
I could not believe the difference a new windshield makes! I changed mine because they were fogged; I didn't realize that the
clarity of the whole windshield degraded over thirty plus years!
I learned why the windshield's fog up too! Over the years dirt gets in between the windshield and the seal it winds up at the bottom
of the seal groove where it retains water and causes fogging. Ken Detterling's team squirted RTV silicone in between the windshield
and glass which seals it and prevents that from happening.

Yes, this information is WAY out of date!
We paid $800 per side and that was a good deal.
Last year when I contacted RV Solutions they wanted $2400 for both sides.

I have been to Olsen's Glass twice in the past ten years.
Just called a day ahead of time and they had the glass there when I arrived. So the glass came from some local source.
If a rally were scheduled in the Eugene area maybe you locals, Kelvin, and Jim Hupy, could convince the Olsen folks to show up and do some installs.
First time I stopped there was on the way to the SOOR Rally at Mapleton. They replaced both sides in about an hour.
Nice folks, good clean work.

They injected black RTV between the seal and the window around the whole windshield; top, bottom, sides.
Yes they coated the edge of the glass with a special quick drying paint.
They filled the gap between the top of the gasket and the body with black RTV.
They filled the gap between the sides of the gasket and the side window frame.

What confused me was when you said “windshield and glass” – To me, those were one in the same – Will take a
guess here and think you meant windshield gasket and glass :d
Two just curious questions:
Did Ken D’s team lift the rubber gasket off the glass to squirt the sealant in or did they just run a bead around the glass
where the gasket ends – Not sure if that was clear or not!
It would have been interesting to ask Ken D’s team if, prior to installation, putting some kind of sealant around the outside
rim of the glass to protect the “laminate” layers would have added extra protection.
But I sure do understand what you meant about dirt getting into the gasket groove – I watched a windshield being replaced up
at JimK’s and was very surprised at how much dirt “fell out” of the gasket when the technician pulled the
windshield out – Both in the glass grove and the body grove..

This is what you get with over 25 years of experience working large trucks and buses. I have watched them do at least 40 GMC windshields over the years and I would still not attempt it myself. That big wrap around curve is the problem. I'm gong to their shop tomorrow morning to watch two more GMC windshields being installed.
I know of at least two GMC owners that have done their installations themselves, so it is doable with experience.
What is more difficult is removing one and reusing it. About 50% of the removed ones crack on the way out.

This is probably not the professional method but when I pulled the windshields on a parts coach I used a Porto power and gently applied pressure to the roof cap after removing the top screws on the division bar and that made the windshields come out quite easily. I also lubed everything with wd40
