A BETTER WAY TO POST TECHNICAL TOPICS
- with hot - links

When posting , talks, session notes, technical topics,
the PDF format offers many advantages

- if you looked at Emery's amazing PDF about hard lines (my interest :>)
http://goo.gl/ryfIQ

you will easily be able to see, expand, scroll back and forward
on your computer, or, smart device (pad, pod, phone, tablet), PPPT.

in addition, you will see the links are active, and you can navigate back
and forth to the references given
like here, try the links
http://goo.gl/qGHPM

so
when you are going to give a technical presentation, you can hand out your
slides ( with links)
on the wonderful GMCphoto site, and your audience can down load , and watch
your on their own PPPT, during the talk.

change is here

For us not-so-in-the-know -- how do we create documents or slides in a PDF format?

Thank you.

Download and install OpenOffice from http://www.openoffice.org/
It is like the "Works" or "Office" suite from that company in Redmond, but it is free and doesn't require activation code or other mumbo jumbo to keep it working, and you can save the documents you create in PDF (unlike the Redmond stuff).
It has a word processor like "Word" called "Writer" and a spreadsheet app like "Excel" called "Calc" and a presentation app like "PowerPoint" called "Impress" and a database app like "Access" called "Base" and a couple others.

Gene, if people can't even be encouraged to use the forum instead of email, how are they going to figure out how to do that?

I actually used Power Point to create the presentation and then saved it as afrom Power Point to a PDF file. For the presentation I had motion and transitions and sound. When you save to a PDF you lose those features but save the pictures which is easy to send to people and to post on Internet sites.

There at a number of ways to create PDFs on windows machines - the easiest being to install a PDF "printer." These take the stream of data that would go to the printer and create a PDF. There are lots of choices, many are free.

In the Mac world we have that ability built into the print dialog box.

I don't use the forum because:

- takes tooo long to down load the format
- I store no email info
- google does my storage
- I have 7 years of back gmcnet email ,I search on google all the time
- I read all my email on smart devices ( want only the current message)

that said

I welcome folks to use what ever works for them :>)

I'm with Gene, I find the forum difficult to use, slow and virtually impossible to read from where you left off, I am NOT a fan of web based forums from a security standpoint, also. Much too easy for spammers to harvest email addresses from.

Sir: when you log in on the forum it hi-lights the topics that you have not read. Newest messages goes to the top. In the threads there is an arrow before the topic that will take you to first unread message in that thread. There is also a litle arrow at the end of the thread that will take you to the last message of that thread. I find it very simple to open the page and just see if there is any new threads in the messages I was following all on one page.

There are several features of the forum that we can't use because not everyone uses it. Photos are a good example. As it is now, photos, if there are any, are orphaned and difficult to find (without your frequent help) because people don't add any comments or tags that help find them and/or connect them to posts.

The Google Groups archive at

great for all of those reasons, but it stopped working several months

Yeah, me, too.

On the forum, it takes me more than a minute to download each email
message, not counting the time it takes to read it.

With my email, I can skim through and delete a dozen or so one line
replies that have no quotes to tell me what they're about in that time.
That covers the good and the not-so-good about email. Or the bad and
not-so-bad about the forum.
If I had European speed internet, it might be different, but I don't.

Beggin' your pardon but you can print to PDF with that Redmond stuff. I
don't use it regularly but know it can be done. Instead, I use those fine
and easier-to-use stuff from Apple. However, whatever one chooses to use
they can still generate a bunch of crap or a heap of great stuff. Just
because you have a word processor doesn't mean you can write, etc.
