Taking the AC off the roof to replace with a newer version.
Got all the covers off and went looking for a "lift hook". The only
thing I find is in the link below.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/miscellaneous/p45617-ac-lift-hook.html

It's near the center of the assembly but it's attached to a
rubber-mounted part. I've never been this close to a rooftop AC, so I
have no idea what that is. Is it the compressor?

Do I lift from that bracket?

Thanks in advance
Kelvin

They're different? I just figured you needed that 6K Onan to run two of
them.
It's on a 230. Only a 4K Onan pushing this one if it matters....

Kelvin,
I think most folks just lift at the corners by hand and put it onto a carpet remmant or such and then slide it over to a ladder and down or many just throw it from the roof as they have no plans to save.
I have never heard anyone mention the lifting eye.

When we replaced mine, we used an extension ladder to make a ramp that allowed us to simply slide it down off the roof. I thought that it might still e of use to someone, so I didn't want to just toss it off the side.

They're not all that heavy really, but be careful on the roof!

Mine was damn heavy. I don't recall exactly what the number was when I weighed it but it is somewhere north of #100. This is the large original style. It made one heckofa thump when it hit the ground.

Found it, heavier than I remembered, searched on the forum and on 4-29-12 I wrote:

The coach is under an steel-roofed cover. There is a 2" round rafter
right above it. I propose hooking to that , lifting it up and moving
the coach out from under it and lowering it down.

At the very least I'm going to try that loop and see what happens. I can
lift and move it but I've learned to use and appreciate "tools".
Although the idea of tossing it off the side sounds like fun my luck it
would bounce back towards the coach and punch a hole in some fiberglass.

Wise man. I had a piece of plywood that bridged from the coach roof to a tall ladder. I was able to get it far enough away from the coach that the AC couldn't hit anything. What was amazing was how little damage that drop did to the steel case. (The plastic cover was long gone.)

That's the one I have. 140# is manageable but not easy while on the
roof and ducking RV cover rafters.
I'll hoist that sucker up with a come-along and take it from there.

I helped Terry Taylor replace his roof A/C a few years ago, and we put a
couple of 2x4s over to the roof of his Suburban that he parked close to
the GMC, then slid the old unit down them. That was already a
replacement Coleman air conditioner that may have been from the 1980s,
but it was much heavier than the new Carrier that we installed.

I backed into a loading dock and backed my truck behind it (one of those loading docks along the side of a bldg) and used a couple of 2x8's as a bridge to slide them into the bed of my pickup.

I bought a 500# lifter from Harbor Freight and hoisted it off the roof.
And that is indeed a lifting hook. The thing is hanging perfectly level
to the ground.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showfull.php?photo=45656

Can only lower it to about 4' from the ground but I can get it from there...

Um... well....

It hung there for 45 minutes or so. Can't see why there would be a lift
hook for the compressor only. It's not that heavy.

I rigged two ropes, from the ground they went up and looped twice through the roof guard rails or whatever they're called, then tied around the AC. Cutting it loose and gently sliding to the edge then lowering it from the ground made it a one-man job. No pix, sorry, didn't want any witnesses. HaHa.

most compressors from about that size and larger had them when I was in the trade. I'm sure it would hold the weight of it but the compressor could pull out of the rubber feet and then**##s--t.

Nope. Just old enough and wise enough to have thought about that up
front. ;^)
I envisioned the whole shebang going thru my windshield as I was backing
out from under it.

There is a nut, 5/8" lock washer and a 3/4" flat washer that would have
to pass thru a 9/16" hole for that to happen. The nut itself would have
a hell of a time making it thru that hole.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/miscellaneous/p45665-compressor-grommet-det.html

Considering how level the AC hung there I would bet the lifting eye was
put there for that exact reason. Would you expect them to slide new
compressors over new paint to install them at the factory? I don't
imagine there were a bunch of 2x4s and carpet scraps laying around for
that installation... :^)
