Hello Netters;
We started our trip here in Alpine Ca on to Steve and Nancy in Sierra Vista.
Ran out of gas out side of Gila Bend after adding 10 gals could not get the engine to fire.
Had to be flat hauled in to Gila Bend.
That was a six hours of waiting for the flat tow rig coming down from Phoenix to pick us up.
Had the nicest folks looking after us at the Texaco in Gila Bend..
Next morning cleaned up some bad terminals with Coke and a tooth brush.
Made it into Steve and Nancy's B&B.
Steve replaced all the ground cables for us.
What a guy!
Spent the next two or three days running around S.V. checking out all the old cars.
Plus some fine Hot Rods.
Then it was on to Gallup NM staying at KOA USA RV Campground.
Good RV place to stay across from the train tracks.
We enjoy the sound of the trains.
Next day up to Durango CO for the day.
Enjoyed sitting have a bottle of good wine and a cheese tray and watching the bikers coming into town for the weekend.
We camped up at Pagosa Springs for the night.
Nice small camp ground.
Next day Wolf Creek Pass not a problem running 3:70 gears and F.I.
Then on to the next pass west of Walsenburg CO.
Out of fuel?
Again called the AAA for gas as I thought we had run out of fuel.
The fuel gauges where giving us fits.
Turned out the F.I was not working.
Next stop Pueblo CO to our nephews home.
After spending some time on the computer and calling folks on the GMC motor home site.
Talking with some very fine and smart folks.
I found Jim K. at work Labor Day weekend.
Jim called me back two or three time to see how I was doing.
Out of the blue Tim no last name called me.
Jim K had asked him to call to see if he could help.
After talking to Tim.
He came up with a "Short" in the wire as a possible problem.
Yes it was the wire running from the distributor to the F.I computer.
The mice had nicked the wire on the bottom side where I could not see the broken covering.
Off to the auto parts store replace 18" of wire.
We are off and running like a champ!!!
Next stop Cotopaxi CO to see friends.
Then to see our kids and grandkids in Centennial CO.
Then back west up over the top through the Eisenhower Tunnel.
On to Green River CO for hamburgers and beer at "Rays Bar" don't miss Rays in Green River CO.
Next Richfield CO KOA very nice.
Stopped off at Canyon Lands spent the day.
Back out on UT -20 that's also quite a pull up to the top and back down to I-15
Then on to St. George a crappy R V park .
Over priced.
The AAA has a three diamonds for that hole.
Never again.
We stopped in Henderson to pickup our daughter.
Next day home to Alpine.
After refueling at Costco in the high desert we had vapor lock from time to time coming down I-15 to San Diego.
Our daughter thought we had winter gas and it was over 105 out side that day.
In all over 2,500 miles in our 38 year old GMC.
Questions please ask.
Thanks

Howard,
I've had the impression from reading this forum that installing fuel injection solved all these fuel delivery and vapor lock issues.
After replacing the rat chewed wire you still vapor lock problems on the way home. What's up with that?

In spite of the problems; sounds like you had a great trip. good to be out on the road in the GMC.

I stopped overnight in Cotopaxi about this time last year.
Did Christo get approval for his "Over the River" art project?
That was being hotly debated last year.

You must have read bad information. Installing fuel injection DOES NOT solve vapor lock. I have had TBI fuel injection since 1993. It is only in recent years that I have had vapor lock problems -- at the time time that ethanol laced gasoline was introduced.

I tried many things and it is only after I installed the in-tank fuel pumps that my problems with it went away.
When a pump sucks on the input it forms a low pressure in the input line and if you are going to have vapor lock that is where it will form vapor. The closer you get the fuel pump to the tank the less problem it is. However my external pump was right outside the sides of the tanks and I still had problems. All gone now.

Emery:

What in tank pumps did you install.

Also, when you had the tanks down, did you replace all the connection hose bits, and where did you source them?

Thanks.

I used two Airtex E3902 pumps. There is also a Carter equivalent. These were about $30+ at Amazon.com.
When installed I eliminated the fuel selector valve as the two pumps can be connected to a T and they have built in check valves so the pumps can be used independently.
The original wire that went to the selector valve is used to power a relay that selects which fuel pump turns on.

If you want I can email you the complete presentation with pictures and parts list and instructions.

All rubber hoses have been replaced with steel lines from the top of the tank to the fuel injection air horn for the fuel side and to the outside of the tank to the rubber vent hoses for the vents. So there is no longer any hoses on top of the tanks to worry about.

I sent it to you about two days after I gave the presentation back in 2010 together with a note saying that you might want to post it to your site.
You sent me a reply thanking me on 9/12/2010.

I will send it again.

"which is why I could never figure out why you kept saying the information was being held captive". You should have had it for about 2 years now.

I had also sent it to GMCES at that because I thought that a lot of people would be interested in this, but it never showed up on their site either.

The closer you get the fuel pump to the tank the less problem it is. However my external pump was right outside the sides of the tanks and I still had problems. All gone now.

Emery did you use hard line in only the 3/8" lines or the 5/16" lines going to the valve in the wheel well also?
