Hello everyone, would just like to confirm, on the stock 16.5" steel wheels, the torque is 250 ft lbs??? seems like we would be snapping studs if that number is correct.

Thanks

That is what the service manual says on DRY studs and nuts. If you look on
any fasteners torque chart for 9/16 in NF grade 8 bolts, you can get to
yield tension at about 100 ft lbs less than that figure. If you lube them,
even less. My personal experience tells me that is way too tight on used
fasteners.

G'day,

The manual is incorrect and was revised to one hundred and fifty foot pounds (150).

Which is a reasonable number when you use anti-sieze lubricant, which
you should.

The difference is the fixed flange on the stock nuts, versus the
captive washers on Alcoa nuts or separate washers on the Eagle wheels.
With the fixed flange nut, the torque reading will be confused by the
much greater friction between the flange and the wheel. Using an
anti-sieze lube greatly diminishes that problem, and a reasonable
torque can be used.

At GMCES during a related discussion, one of our morre experienced members
recounted a recent incident: Someone with lug-centered Eagle wheels had
some problems which resulted in them replacing the studs on one hub. 3 of
8 studs were necked down and cracked 1/2 way through. Obviously the result
of 240 ft-lb cycles. Might serve as a word to the wise. With ~100,000
miles on my coach since I bought it with Alcoas already installed before
59,000 miles, I'm pretty confident of my studs. If I acquired a coach with
steel wheels still installed, I'd VERY CAREFULLY inspect all the studs --
would probably even replace them as I removed the hubs for brake and
bearing servicing.
