I have a pristine 48K 97 SLS and now see brown glop puking from the from spark plug holes and on the front VC. I pulled the plug wires and there's gloop and corosion in the wells and on the wires. I used Deoxit D5 to clean the wires and sprayed some in each plug well. It also took the brown film right off the valve (cam) cover. I added 3 Barsleak tablets but leel was only 1.5 inchs from top??? and now need to get more Dexcool, distilled water and more tablets for drain, rinse and fill. Not going to use any flush chemicals. Just going to drain and fill every 2 years and keep it full and cap clean. Hopefully I don't have to junk this beautiful car as the thing runs great and the glove leather interior is spectular.

My buddy just spent $5000 on his 2000 Northstar because it blew a head gasket. Only 60,000 summer mi.on the car. Brown goop was everywhere, rad was plugged, hoses full of it, water jackets partially plugged. It was a mess. Dealer said it was because the coolent was never changed. The car was dealer serviced twice a year & they never changed it because they thought there weren't enough miles. Also these Northstars had head bolt problems. Aren't you lucky the GMC 455 & 403 don't suffer this problem.

With all coolants, it's not miles but time. 2 years. Say it again. 2 years. Zero miles or 100K miles makes no difference its 2 years. Dexcool says 5...... 2 years.

Dexcool certainly had it's problems and new formulations are just fine. However, many of the GM intake manifold and head gasket issues were not necessarily due to Dexcool. If you really need to clean the cooling system, use a cup of Oxalic acid followed by baking soda. Contrary to many opinions, this will not hurt your cooling system and does an excellent job of cleaning the entire system including the overflow/pressure tank. It's the only effective cleaner we use on our 100,000 plus trucks.
