We are in Peggy's Cove, N.S. And Glenns coach needs the right side axel. We
figure we might make it into Maine so if we could find one before or have
one ordered we would want to have it delivered State side.

Another GMCer recently used Mike Glover in NH and was pleased. And from bdub's site, the address, tel. no. and other info as well as a recommendation (4/10) from another GMCer. Even if you don't need a mechanic, he can probably advise you well with local knowledge.

Wayne, As the axles are interchangeable, you could use the one that we
took out of Sandy's coach at Dick Paterson's if she still has it with her.
It will get you stateside until you can find a new one. If I can help from
here, 20 miles from Jim K and Manny T. Let me know. Wish I were with you
guys, Judy and I both miss you guys.

Dwayne,

You Need to get a hold of Sean Kidd (look over on the swap meet board). He is about to scrap two drive axles. They won't be cheap to ship, but one can travel in a box by small parcel carrier.

Do It Now.

I know Jim K. has used axles if you dont come up with one. They are fast to ship. Jim may be on the road but he has folks there to ship it out for you.

Damn!

I have several used Toro Axles & 1 rebuilt Toro axle that I kept for the CV
joints. Too bad you didn't need one when you were next door!!

I can clean & inspect a pair of CVJs for you to be sure they are good. I
have the correct Moly-type CVJ grease in pre-measured pouches that I can
include, and I'm even willing to ship the CVJs without a shaft from NY to
get around any customs issues. all Glenn needs is the ability to swap the
CVJs onto his own shaft.

Payment can wait until Glenn & Darlene are back home if that helps.

Just let me know if I can be of any help.

If you mark the box as "vintage auto parts" (which they are) you will have
no issues with customs or duty going into Canada. This has been my
experience in getting parts and returning cores to Dick Paterson from SoCal
to Ontario,CA.

If you can make it to the states, there's still a fair chance of being able
to get rebuilt "real" Toronado axles from parts stores. Advance, I know,
has photos on their web site of what they're offering. It's no guarantee
of getting the correct axles but at least you can look, inform the clerk
that you can only use the very ones shown (if correct), and try to get them
to order in several -- or talk to the warehouse to get them "on the same
frequency".

No way around having to swap the CV's to the GMC axles.

Surely Mike Beaton has spares?

Hi Ken
Glenn's coach was thumping away on the trip back from Halifax to Peggy's
Cove - 40 minute drive.
He felt for sure it was the CV joint. He removed the wheel the next
morning and was able to move it
by hand. So the search began. We all got in our coaches and drove to
Lunenburg (Where they are restoring the Blue Nose)
all the way there his coach ran normal - no thumping??? He says he had
replacd it in 2003 and although it runs fine now
he still wants to replace it.
His plans are to go with us to New Orleans then cut across to Florida to
have his windshields replaced. He has horizontal cracks on
both then on the way here he hit a large bird on the passengr side that
cracked it vertically and at the impact location shows several cracks.
Other than that we are having a great time.
Hugh and Rosemary MacDougall !978 Palm Beach in very good condition from
Antigonish joined us for the last 3 nights then yesterday
Corwin and Rose Marie Hirtle from Bridgewater,NS joined us in their newly
aquired 1978 Transmode by Hughes.
We re headed for Digby, N.S. today where we board a 3 hr ferry trip to St.
John, NB and stay at Adam Raeburn's for the night.
Tomorrow we'll head for Maine to start the return trip through the US.
Have logged more than 6500 miles so far.
Once in the states I'll look into the tire deal offered through FMCA and
Michelin.
The guys on the NET have been a great help and now having met a number of
them it firms up the reason for driving a Classic GMC.
I called Mike and he does not have a spare. It's hard to imagine that he
doesn't or is it because he doesn't know where to start looking amongst his
collection of spare part GMC's (2) and colection of spare part VW's. He
and Les Burt need to get together and start a used VW parts dealership and
have someone else run it allowing them time to concentrate on the more
important GMC's. . Both wives would then be happy campers then and they
could join JIm Hupy and ourselves on the "Tour Detroit Auto Museums and
then Route 66 Rolling Rally in 2014.

Dwayne,

Seeing as how I'm 1000 miles from home too, the spare axle setting in my
storage room can't be of much help -- unless y'all come by GA on the way to
New Orleans. :-)

I still think there's a chance of finding a Cardone rebuilt Toro axle from
some parts house.

One of the reasons why the family of my parts coach never came back to pick
it up was the front end....when I drove it to it's parking spot, I couldn't
be sure it would make it with the clunking form a or the, cv-joint(s) and
that was about 1000 feet. There was at least one bad and one was spitting
grease...a time waster to do anything with either I thought.

I've never heard one that bad. When they start rumbling during turns, I
replace them -- or DID; with the 1-Ton, I hope I won't have to do that
again.

Dwayne, You will probably be here before you read this but,why does Glen think he needs the "Axle" replaced?

Seeing as I am a noob to these units I of course must go to the shop manual and the trouble diagnosis section.

Under section 3B in the X-7525A manual it says nothing of the axle causing noise when driving. it mentions loose flange bolts and incorrect U-joint angle and front end curb height setting (ride height IS very important.) It also mentions a sticky spider assembly. Just asking for future reference on my part.

and
and

sometimes this noise , on the road, can be eliminated by swapping the
axles.
the cv joints wear (as shown in this set of slides) and by swapping sides
(l to r) you wear in different locations.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/cv-joint-problems/p7209.html

it is some work, but since you are on the road with no parts, it might be
worth a try
the axles will come off with out removing any other items.

read the set of slides and see what you think. Manny and I did it at a
rally in Los Osos , Canada.

took us about an hour..... ( Manny is a wild man)

good luck

Dwayne and crew just left for Maine. Glenn's right axle has been behaving itself since they left Nova Scotia. He has the left Axle from Sandra's rig and will swap if things get bad again.

It was good to be part of the rolling rally if only as a parking spot for the night Smile safe travels to all.
