Hello Gene Craig & Rob,
Thank you for all the helpful advice. Yup, I found out that the whole axle kit is no longer available, and realize it is a slippery slippery slope. (as I am finding out with all things on these lovely GMC ladies ! )
In going through the PO's (Roy Goetzke.... anyone know him ? ) reciepts, I see he replaced:
~ x2 Hub units in 1985 ($ 1800)
~ Final drive Differential in 1999 ($1848)
~ x4 CV axle joints in 1999 ($ 595)
~ Lower ball joints in 1999 ( $ 716)
~ Front rotors in 2003 ( $166)
~ Bilstein shocks (Date / Price unknown)
So given all of the above, can I be somewhat assured that things are in pretty good shape ? PO put over $ 18 K (in receipts that I could find) since 1985. So thankfully he took quite a bit of care of his baby !!!!
I did find a shop to replace the boot (says I can't be done without dropping the knuckle) for 100 smackeroos or less on Wednesday. So I think subjecting everyone to repairs at Amana is not a very good idea (except the fun it would be to have a peanut gallery rallying around me while I get dirty !!)

So is the whole axle kit available? If so where? I just purchased a 1977
Birchaven, and would like to get her in good enough shape to travel.
