Ever since I bought my 77PB 10 years ago, the tranny didn't seem quite right. When I'm at speed and let of the throttle just enough to coast, it seems like the transmission disengages. When I give it a little more engine speed, the engine free wheels and then re-engages the gear.

I would expect it to stay coupled all the time and the only "slop" in the system would be the gear lash in the final drive.

I thought that may be some kind of gas saving coast mode in the tranny but now I am thinking it may be something like a bad modulator.

The fluid has been changed and is full on the dip stick.

Is that how the tranny is supposed to act or should I dig in?

Thanks!
