We are currently in Illinois and planning to cross Iowa and Nebraska on US-20 into Wyoming. We are thinking of following US-20 to where it intersects I-25, taking I-25 to Casper and then following Wyoming 220 down to I-80 to get to Salt Lake City. Any advice or opinions? Thanks.

Don't forget to take a picture of the tree Armand. The scenery will be
pretty boring but the local sights, small towns, museums etc, will be not
trip your trigger either.

I lived in Bellevue, Nebraska while in the USAF and heard all about how the western part of the state looked so I know it will be somewhat boring but can't be as bad as crossing on I-80. I have heard that the Sand Hills area is 'scenic' so maybe...

Just no way around it Armand. Blue collar flat and even the corn fields
are in fallow now. Just a bummer to get through all that, but on the
upside, the Virgin river gorge is waiting for you. See you in Utah.

Speaking of gorges, have you ever seen the Watkins Glen Gorge in NY? If not, check out my blog entry on it. Glad you will make it to Utah - see you there.

No. Have never seen it and never will Armand. I have no interest in any
travel east of the Mississippi. We have spent nearly all of our lives
traveling in the west and as a result of that last bike trip I took with a
neighbor, I realize that I may not have enough travel time left in me to
see what is here. I always considered myself well traveled, until that one
week trip. Have you ever been to Black Canyon, CO? I never knew it
existed til that trip. A stunning place to visit for sure. Too much to
see too close. You have people back east so your primary reason for
traveling back there is not scenery. I have no people anywhere other than
MN and I have made too many trips across what you are facing to want to go
there in the near future.
Have a safe trip.

Wally, thanks for that info. It looks like it has to be better than I-80. We plan to spend a couple of nights near Valentine. Do you know anything about the roads in the western part of the state and in Wyoming? Is there a lot of climbing before I-80?

Well it has been three years since we went out that way. I don't remember roads being bad. Two lane stuff but towns are farther apart than Iowa (bigger farms/ranches) Crops less father west and more cattle ranches. As Steve says pretty flat. Really if you have time 20 is a good way.
In Iowa just off 20 east of Waterloo is a Frank Loyd Wright home in Quasqueton.
http://franklloydwrightsites.com/iowa/quasqueton/walterhouse.htm
The guy he built it for started blacktop for roads.
Field of dreams movie site is in Dyersville on 20.
Dubuque has the National Mississippi Museum.

I don't know the route, but if it takes you anywhere near Minden, NE, be
sure to visit the Pioneer Village there. It's more than worth the day it
will take to do it right:

Ken, thanks for the suggestion but we are going across the top of the state. We probably should have done that on the way east - next time I guess.

Armand,
Two weeks ago we were at Starving Rock State Park on the Illinois River, Utica, Il.
Tonight we are in Echo, Oregon on the Umatilla River.

If you're not in a hurry and have any interest in the 19th century migration and settlement of the American West go down to Council Bluffs/ Omaha and pick up the Morman Trail.

Follow it to Salt Lake City. Nice easy trip up the Platte and Sweetwater Rivers. Down the Green River toward Ft. Bridger, Wy. and on to Utah.

Easy grades all the way. The emigrants did it with oxen, mules, horses and wagons and on foot. So it's easy in the GMC.

We picked up the Pony Express, California,Oregon Trails at St. Joseph, Missouri; Joined the Mormon trail at Lincoln, Neb and are continuing to follow the Oregon Trail all the way to the end at Oregon City.

We've stopped at every historical site and interperetive center and wagon trail rut along the way. Enjoyed them all and learned a few new things

We've camped at Ft. Kearny State Park Campground- Ft. Kearny, Neb.,
Chimney Rock, Nebraska,
Guernsey Rut Rv Park Gurnsey, Wy.
Lander, Wyoming
Montpelier, Idaho KOA
Three Island Crossing State Park at Glenn's Ferry, Idaho
Catfish Junction, Ore
Echo, Ore.

The Emigrant Trails route is a bit longer than straight out on I-80 but it's sure a lot more interesting if you stop and pick the roses along the way.

Which ever route you take; have a safe trip and enjoy yourself.

Just for Gene Fisher and the other techies on the net- Virgin Mobile Mifi did not work through most of Nebraska, all of Wyoming and Idaho. It's working here but very slowly.

Always slow, but :
- does work driving down the road
- when I cannot find a McD
- cost is $20 for a month of use
- no contract, or monthly cost
- should be good at TI rally (internet was $10 a day, there, last year:>)
- gives me 5 access points , all the time (no jail break)
--- ipod
--- ipad
--- netbook
--- ?
--- ?

- I am going to park next to Gary Bovee, at TI and use his ;>)
Great to know where it works, and does not. So far, it has been great in:
- Oregon
- California
- Hawii

thanks for the info

WHAT???

Here I live in the beautiful Ozarks region of this great country......yet I vacation right along Hwy 20 just as Armand has planned.

I assume that when you make such statements that you are well versed with that area, which would seem not to be the case.

Armand, do NOT avoid Ft Robinson. It is near Crawford as I recall and very interesting. It served as an outpost in the Indian War period all the way up to housing WW2 POW's. They have a great campground with hook ups. Crazy Horse surrendered there and was subsequently killed in captivity. You can easily imagine the parade grounds filled with mounted troops.

Gene, we are pretty committed to US-20 and it sounds interesting. When I was in the USAF at Omaha you could still see the ruts from the wagon trains where they crossed the Missouri River. If I ever come this way again I will follow your suggestion. Thanks.

No idea what you're into, but there are a fair number of historic sites along your path, and natural landmark features. Driving westbound early morning when it's sunny can be pretty breathtaking across the plains, especially the sand hills.

The worst, IMO, is north central Iowa starting around Waterloo if you have the windows open due to the various confined livestock operations. Hold your breath for a couple hours, you'll be ok! Enjoy.
