No,Sully. My droid/hot spot just went wampy on me. Seems Ok now. Matt, I
have been doing some thinking about internet tech sessions. They would be
too lengthy for the gmcnet and forum, but there are ways. Pdf files would
work and YouTube as well. Dick Peterson and I talked some about video
recording projects like straigtening bogie arms. Hard to do unless some
planning like lighting and power supplies for power hungry video recording
devices. I will give it a try and see what happens.

We could do them at my shop. I know the lighting wasn't the greatest in my Sullybilt video but correcting that is easy.

Hey, that might work well. We can try it. It might give the others
incentive to try it as well. Maybe this winter.

The problems can become large. A few years back, Ken Burton set up and
broadcast some of our (IIRC, GMCES) tech sessions over the 'net. A LOT of
work for mediocre results.

April of last year, Bill Bramlett visited here and rebuilt several TH-425's
for us. A Dixielander with many years experience as a videographer came to
make a video of the operation. We set up lights, microphones, professional
camera, etc. Bill was very patient and repeated a lot of operations for
the camera and was careful of what he said. BIG problem was that 'most all
day, it poured down rain! On my shop's metal roof. :-( The audio was
un-usable despite sophisticated efforts to filter it.

Bill agreed to dub the video when completed -- but that hasn't yet
happened. The videographer was so disappointed, I think he's completely
lost interest -- usually won't return my calls.

My little Flip video camera works so well, including audio, that I
sometimes think I could just set it up on a tripod and capture a session.
'Tain't gonna work.

I like the ideas, but just wanted to inject that little bit of caution.

the best camera to use is a Zi8 kodak, with a radio shack 20 foot wire lapel mic plugged into it.

cost about $100. need a small 7 dollar tripod on a table - tape it to the table. lin and larry pardey use this one

and makes great dvd's .

you can have battery switching, and sd card switching much better than flip for it goes longer with an extra battery switch and memory is longer

and removable with a few cards and batteries you can do hours straight.

they stopped making them but these are best and cheap for internet or dvd's

I suggest you first decide exactly what you want at to accomplish. Is it live, interactive, recorded for on demand at a later date, etc. We were trying to accomplish "live" interactive seminars. Paul Bartz put a lot of effort into preparing the first seminar and it went OK until we hit a bandwidth threshold at about 40 concurrent viewers. After we fixed the bandwidth problem by installing a distribution server at a ISP with virtually unlimited bandwidth, we ran into problems with other people wanting to see this stuff but no one wanting to prepare the actual presentations. We broadcast live from several rallies and many people wanted to see and hear that stuff. No one wanted to spend the time on the broadcast end. I spent two entire rallies doing it but after that with no volunteers to help, I quit. No one wanted to spend several hundred dollars getting there and in rally fees just to be tied down most of the time doing the live stuff for non-attendees. You can't blame them.

Then we had lots of complaints from the email technology crowd with inadequate receive capabilities on their end. You can not fix that for them. You can not fix on your end the shortcomings on their end.

The final complaint we got was we were hurting or in competition with GMCnet. Again it was the people stuck in the 1990's world where the Internet is dial up internet access and email.

Today the technology is there, the bandwidth is there, just decide ahead of time exactly what you want to accomplish and who your audience is. If it does not need to be live or interactive then just record what you want and make it available on utube or for download.

Been there, done that but not with the GMC crowd. Ken alludes to a real
problem. The real problem is making a video with good enough lighting,
sound, and commentary to actually make it worth viewing. Something happens
with humans when they're in the cold environment of "me and the PC". As a
result, a video of a session winds up having to be like a good sermon --
obvious points and obviously less than 22 minutes. Now, the larger problem
with all of this is editing. It would take twice as much time (or more) to
edit such content. Watch a home movie and you know what I mean. Watch a
professionally produced thing and you see the big difference -- lights,
camera, action, good story line, great editing, and very efficient.

I watch a lot of 20-minute things related to my job as a database developer
-- new techniques, how to capitalize on the new features, etc. It takes
concentration to stay with them the first time through. The nice thing is
that you can go back and watch. The bad thing is that there never seems to
be the time to go back.

It's a great thought to have some virtual sessions. We come close when a
person puts together a good slide show and a PDF with some verbiage. I try
to do that with my things. Everyone wants it immediately after the session.
However, 48 hours after that the excitement dies and only one or two people
wind up looking at what I spent another hour polishing and correcting what I
did wrong in the live presentation. 'Tis a lot of work for two people.

This is my view of the reality. Your perception may be different and you're
welcome to take your time, brain power, and equipment to give it a try. I'd
be willing to help. If more owned the project it might be more successful.
However, for a reward, I can do other things more easily and I suspect I'm
not alone in this thought.
