I've just been in contact with an old family friend who owns a small transmission & torque converter shop. He is close to 70.years old and considering closing up in the next year or so. His primary business for the past 10-15 years has been parts sales and custom race torques.
He has a decent inventory of stuff with a good portion being for the TH400. I ' asked if he had any TH425 parts and he will take a look for me over the next few weeks.
So my question is: what parts should i look out for? I know that the friction parts, seals, and the chain are still available. I'm more interested in chasing after the obsolete NLA parts. I'll pursue the common stuff later provided I can strike a deal.
Anyone able to help produce a list of the TH425 desirables?

Sir: I believe the front pump is 425 only.

Les,
I have the 425 manual as a pdf file if you would like it. I have it
as a large file of 49 MB or 4 small files of about 12 MB each.

Is this the same manual referred to by Ted in the 3.21 FD thread? I'd like a copy regardless and as vdubs says. It should be on his site for all of our reading pleasure.
I already have some PDF manuals that cover the 67 Toro SP units. I belive I pulled them from bdubs site.

I am considering calling Manny, but only when I have a better idea of what my friend has in his stash of goodies. If I'm going to pick Manny's brains, I feel I should have something to offer in return (hopefully some desirable tranny parts)

Seems like governors might be a good thing to latch onto. I don't know much about them. I know the car ones are a different calibration than the GMC ones, but Wally or someone was fooling with calibrations, and Jim K. offers rebuilt/recalibrated ones. Not sure if a car one can be tuned to be a GMC one or not. But, I believe they are unique from the 400's at any rate.

The governor on a 400 is much different that on a 425.

Les,
I just checked the Bill of Lading (BOL) under which I had a TH-425 (only,
no torque converter, final drive, nor stub axle) shipped from Manny to me:
250#. And that's in a very well constructed plywood box with internal
cleats to secure the transmission and for screws to grip through the
plywood, plus provisions for forklift tines to get beneath it.
IIRC, the FD weights 85#. The stub axle I'd WAG at 20# max. I wouldn't
expect any significant difference in weight between standard and switch
pitch. I don't know the dry weight of a torque converter, but saw
somewhere 40# with ATF.
If Canadian policies are like in the US, be sure to ship between commercial
addresses where forklifts are available. BIG cost savings. And
comparison shop, including from each end. My cost was over $80 cheaper
than the quotation Manny got for the same freight class, on the same truck
line, between the same addresses.

Thanks Ken, this should get me close enough. I'll overestimate & use a
total weight of 425 for a full assy with FD.
I'd be shipping within the US.
