I was running around in The Beast today; just around town, lots of stop and go. I took a laser thermometer along and periodically checked the temp on the new rear muffler.
Now admittedly this wasn't a long highway run, so I was only seeing temps in the 240 to 270 range, shot from under the bumper.
What is acceptable/expected under highway conditions.
This is a 455 engine.

As long as your running a heat shield on the top of the muffler, you should
not need to be concerned.
Also make sure all the connectors are very tight.

I have no idea how much cooling happens in the long pipe to the back, but we see 1200 degrees riight after the headers on a hill just befor the power valve opens (Power Enrichment in TBI) It can climb to 1250 and 1300 quickly (30 seconds) if PE does not kick in.
