OK guys, here's great challenge for all of you electronics experts.

I got my hands on an awesome radio out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, it has a 6 CD
changer, satellite capability, etc., so I'm fired up to put it in the coach.

I got new speakers and have them all installed and I go to install the radio
and........OH OH... DANG !!!

Th2009 Jeeps (and most other newer vehicles I've found out) come with this new
CAN-BUS system. This radio needs the CAN-BUS system just to allow TURNING IT ON
!

There's a 12v DC lead and a ground for full time power, and then a Can Bus +
lead and a Can Bus - lead.

I've dug into this CAN BUS thing to the point it's just about turned my brain to
oatmeal.

Various companies make adapters to you can put after market radios into the new
CAN BUS vehicles, but I haven't been able to find a thing that will allow a CAN
BUS radio to be put into an older vehicle.

Any ideas or does anyone know where I can get a so-called CAN BUS adapter or
simulator ???

There has to be a way to make this work.

Thanks for any help you can give.

man Ray. that is a tough one. you are going backwards. I have to say, I do not know if they do make the backwards. never heard of anybody installing a factory radio in an aftermarket vehicle.!

call crutchfield... www.crutchfield.com

they might be able to help.

you should move into modern era though:

Speedy ship all your CD's to me. I will burn them and put them all on one USB jump drive. and ship it back to you.

no need for any CD player. or disk changer. Stream Pandora radio, and forget about the satellite radio.

my 4 and 5 year old daughters do not even know what a CD is now.

wish I could be more help.

BTW. the can-bus. is really just an interface for the cars computer. think of ODBII.

everything is tied together. so in the jeeps case, the radio actually talks to the cars computer digitally.

car, radio, all meshed together now. spendy repairs!

there might be something out there.

Interesting Jon, I have that exact Pioneer DEH 6400 BT radio that my son-in-law
gave to me, I also got the Jeep radio free. I just really like the more
conventional radios and would love to make this work. My plan is to remove the
radio completely from the dash to make room for a digital gauge system that I
have and I had planned to mount the radio into a center type counsel I'm
building.

I also called Crutchfield, they said "that is a tough one", they do not have any
reverse simulators/adapters.

Word on the net is that they do make reverse adapters for specific cars in
Germany, but I also searched that to death and got no where.

I like a good personal challenge so I want to make this work. If all else
fails, I'll put in the Pioneer.

Thanks

If memory serves, there are CAN-bus converters out there.  That's the only way it's gonna work.  Or simply bite the bullet and buy a seperate obne with the sams size speakers and install it using only the existing mounts.  I bought a decent Dual w/CD player and extra in and out for 50 bux at Orielly's.  Speakers $20 a pair from Amazon.  Perfect toad radio.

IIRC one of the purposes of the Can-Bus system is to tie the radio into the computer which has the VIN so if the radio is stolen it cannot be used anywhere else. There may be ways to reprogram or fake it out but I'm not enough up on this CAN-BUS system to know how. Suggest you search out some auto audio forums for the answer to this.

Same sort of thing as the Dual.  Only moving oarts are the knob - which is usually an optical resolver - and the switches on the front.  I'm gonna call BS on their '200 Watts RMS' until they add a distortion spec and power bandwidth.  It might make 200 Watts of a distorted 1KHz sine wave on a good day.

Hi Jon,

I am looking at options for a new radio to replace the 8 track (that came with 2 boxes of polka tapes) in our GMC. I saw that cd players are disappearing and this makes good sense to me. Less moving parts = less breakdowns. Are you willing to make any recommendations as to brands /features/ price /ease of installation,  that led to your purchase decision ? I am also looking forward to seeing what others have installed when we visit Amana. ( Will be really tired of Polka music by the time we get there ! lol)

Unfortunately I have no additional words of wisdome for you.

The radio you have gets permission to turn on and is verified by the vehicle's body computer. On aa GMC MH without a BCM to communicate with, I do not know how to turn it on. You might talk to someone a Jeep in the service dept. I know in the case of a GM radio they can install the a radio and then plug in to the OBDII port and reprogram the radio to match it's new vehicle. I'm wondering of there is an option with a Tech 2 scanner at the dealership to turn off that requirement to communicate with the BCM.

POLKA TAPES !! Please don't ever camp next to me !! HA HA !!

I recently got a new IPhone and came into the 21st century. I am blown away by
how many APP's you can get for it. My favorite already is Pandora's, it's FREE
and what a great selection of music !

In looking on Crutchfields site recently, I see they now make a radio....or
should I say amplifier that uses APP's for music, made me realize how the radio
broadcasting industry and satellite radio is on the verge of a big change.

I'm changing directions here, will put in a radio or something that has an input
for the IPhone, etc and play the free music off Pandora.

Radio installation is pretty straight forward. Buy any 1 DIN size radio, enlarge the radio hole in the plastic dash, bend the ears of the metal frame of the old radio hole. Be sure to attach the rear mounting strap to the coach, it supports the weight of the radio. Identify the radio power lead (NOT the GREY one). Ground to metal frame. Install new speakers, or remove the common ground from each speaker, install separate grounds to each speaker, along with better positive leads, (or, buy Crutchfield floating ground adapter). A newer GMC will not have the common speaker ground, so you may be able to skip this step. I do not remember the year this changed, but my 1975 had common ground speaker returns. Do not assume that your current radio supports the separate grounds, the wrong guess here will destroy the radio amplifier, and you will be buying another one. This will get you going. Then you can identify some of the other wires to turn on the dimming feature for night time usage. Also, the power lead to keep the memory alive (battery drainer here).
Suggestion is to get one with both a USB input and an auxiliary input, to allow you to connect an iPod, or other storage source of music.
I would not go audiophile crazy with the radio, the GMC noise level defeats you.
Many good choices out there, look at the difficulty of the menuing, and how small the display is. Might be hard to see from the normal driver's seat. Remote controls are very common at any price range, and kind of neat. One GMCer attached the remote to his steering wheel and controlled the radio with it easily at hand.
I did wire my radio to the house battery, run radio for a long time without draining the engine battery. We do want to get back home.
Look on the photo site for photos of the physical installation process.

Someone was asking my opinions on car stereos:

electronics change too fast. I do not install often enough to keep up on the exact models. every time I have to reshop and learn all the new stuff.

Crutchfield is a good website to shop at. Their prices are not that far out of line.

all stereos start basic, and a few more dollars add this, and ad that. remember a stereo that says it is satellite radio compatible, still needs another kit that has the antenna/electronic box. The one i listed was one that had all the features I think a person needs.

for the price in todays market, The only reason I like having a cd player, if I have people with me that have a cd they want to listen to. for my own music, it either comes off my phone, or is on a usb thumb drive.

I love pandora. That is my primary source of music. But I also have a company phone with unlimited data. I have no idea what kind of phone plan you need to run pandora all the time.

it does take a little work to get the Cd's "ripped" to the computer. then copy them to a usb jump drive. But you can buy 16 gig jump drives for $25.00. and 16 gigs will hold 3000-5000 songs. It is really not hard to do.

I like the bluetooth to link a phone to the stereo. or ipod/ipad. no wires, no wearing out jacks.

I like a usb port for the jump drive.
most have them on the front. and you have to look at the jump drive. others have them also in the back, so you set it up and forget it. but if you ever change your music, you have to pull the deck.

most of the newer stereo also have the aux input. so you can attach your iphone/phone with a small cable.

as mentioned something to watch out for is the common ground.(one speaker wire to speaker. speaker is grounded to the chassis) My 75 had that as well. there are common ground converters. but I do not believe they work that well. I had to run new wires on my coach. and I just have the fronts hooked up for now.

I think I am going to amana. but just for a day, and not sure witch day. Looking like wednesday now. coach will be staying home.

I like pioneers, because they usually use a wheel for the volume, and not buttons. I hate stereos that use buttons for volume control. but unfortuntely most stereos have too many buttons for their own good.
I also always loose the remotes.

Like it has been said before. what you do all depends on how much money and time you want to spend.

Yep, that's what I do. Plug my iPhone in and play Pandora. During the "seasons" I can listen to football games or NCAA men's championship games as I did when traveling to Shawnee in April of this year.
