Was anyone here bidding on the 3.21 final drive up on evil-buy Monday
night? I hope I didn't upset anyone by winning the bid ;)

Actually I think I got a decent deal at ~$110 for both the FD & stub axle.
All I need to do is figure out the cheapest shipping from Oregon to NY. So
far I've got an approximate quote of $120 via FedEx. Does anyone think I
can find a cheaper mode of shipping?

I do all my shipping with Freightquote.com, mainly 3-600 lbs crates. In my experience Fedex is the most expensive but it's funny how some routes are much cheaper with one company than others. Everyone has their sweet spot it seems. Freightquote checks all lines that service the areas and you get to choose the one you want. No cost to you and no obligation to get the bid. Also, I've verified many times that the rate is considerably cheaper going through Freightquote than through the particular company. Freightquote invoices you and pays the trucking company.

If what you have is smaller and doesn't have to go truck, I'd definitely check with UPS and even USPS. Again, Fedex is traditionally the most expensive.

This is bizarre:

Regarding freightquote.com. i had never heard of them so i went ot their site. I may need some parts moved from a junkyard in Ohio so i filled in the form with my number and email then i clicked the button.

While the page was loading, it got hung up so i moved on to something else, my phone rang- an 800 number- i ignored it, they left a message- it was a live person from freightquote.com wanting to know how they could help me.

I guess they really want my business.

Les,

I don't understand why people apologize here when they win an auction. You WON it fair and square.

That's not a bad price, I've bought two of them but they came with switch pitch transmissions.

I would suggest you try uShip: http://www.uship.com/

Also I would suggest once you've got it you contact John Biwersi, he'll tell you what and how to inspect it before you install it.
He sent me a set of seals and the tools to replace them.

Email: jbiwersi@mac.com
Tel: (651) 216-2963

It might be an idea to have it shipped to him and let him check it out.

Regards,
Rob M.

Thanks for the suggestions on shipping. I'll check them out tonight and see
what they offer.

Rob,
I was considering contacting John as we have already discussed these FDs in
the past. I've decided that I will pull it apart myself and if necessary
I'll contact John for parts. I've done quite a few final drives from other
vehicles in the past, so this one doesn't scare me. I'm actually very
curious to see the inner workings.

I'd sure like to find a switch pitch as well, but it is quite low on my
list of essentials for my coach. I need to get it roadworthy first!

Ted,

The SWPT, FD, Axle, and hanger I won on eBay was $200. I had MannyT rebuild it and put in a Power Drive that way with the 3.21 to 1
I'll wind up at 3.66 to 1.

I just heard back from the seller of my 3.21 FD. He tells me he has 2 complete SP transmissions and 2 with some parts missing. All 4 come from 66-67 toros. I'm trying to find out what parts are missing from the 2 incomplete units and was wondering if this is worth pursuing for someone here? I personally do not need them but it all depends on pricing.

Any time you use FreightQuote, be sure to get quotations from both ends of
the shipment. When Manny shipped me the 1-Ton and again when he shipped
the TH-425, he got a quotation from here to there. I then got a quotation
to there from here. In both cases the savings from here to there were very
significant; I don't remember the exact number but on the order of 25%-30%
-- over $100 for the 1-Ton.

I don't know whether he's responsible for my big savings, but the
individual I use is bdriscoll at freightquote.com

I am working on getting my S/P working again When Ken and I were driving my coach around adjusting the alignment The trans felt like it was hesitating going into gear. I have tried again since and it only does it when its Hot When it is cold it works perfectly over and over again. The only thing I can come up with so far is the fluid is foaming when hot. I just found my set of guages and my old TH400/425 manual with all of the pressures in it Im wondering if when i replaced the filter i might have damaged the O-Ring. But if its more I might be interested in the S/P transmissions.

Is your th425 manual a GM publication or is it from the aftermarket?

I have a PDF copy of the GM manuals that I found online. It would like to get my hands on an aftermarket publication as they often contain additional tricks and info.

It is the Hydra-matic Systematic troubleshooting Manual. Its only 41 pages and it shows the pressures and troubleshooting flow charts it is exactly like this.

Ted that would be great. You might want to wait for a reply from John Wright (see the Th425 parts thread) as he has a PDF of a manual that might be the same as yours. If his manual is a different item, then the GMCMH community would benefit from you scanning yours and sending it to bdub for inclusion on his site.

Could I point out that there are several editions of that manual. I have at

I use freightquote at work. lately they have been spotty, like non hi-cube trucks showing up when requested, no air-ride, general dip-shitty drivers... Seems to mostly be the carriers fault, but there has been some iffy communications.

They are just a broker, getting the lowest bid and making as much of a margin as possible, which, on a $3k truckload is sometimes only $100-150.

It does help to have a contact there to help, but not always. I speak to Leslie at Ext 1510. sometimes you can get a whole truck for the price of LTL...

These are the manuals I already have. To my recollection they don't cover any pressure testing or pressure specs.
