Hi Dan ~ So glad you posted about the shiny Alcoas. I just started shining mine up (only had the coach for one year instead of 8 ) Like my neighbor Larry in Menomonie, WI......I would love to know what the right stuff is to make them all purty again !

Dan,
I got a better idea - spray them with Eagle Mag Wheel cleaner. It's a combination of hydrochloric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid and
surfactants. Emery said surfactants are basically soap.
The directions say specifically NOT to use it on polished aluminum wheels. When you spray it on it foams up a bit (eating into the
aluminum I guess).
DON"T LAUGH - with the shiny nut covers and the GMC hub caps they look damn good! You'll see at Amana!
Hell of a lot less work too!
I stumbled on to this stuff to clean the dead paint off Double Trouble when I was down at Emery's. Spray it on, use a kitchen
sponge with Scotch Brite on one side and Voila - the dead paints gone in no time flat.
Regards,
Rob M.

Gus, I cant look right now but will when I get home from Memphis. Chuck Boyd got this for me and only thing I have found that will
work on badly neglected wheels. I been rubbing on these for 8 years. Never really expected to get the shine back but I am getting
real close now. I use my hands, no power ball, which would no doubt speed things up.I have not tried the Alcoa process that Jim K
sells so I cant say how it would compare. When I have something heavy on my mind I can rub on the Alcoas and see progress every
time, just a little closer. It is real gritty stuff. I rub it on with my fingers, work it in real good with my hands, then rub the
crap out of the wheel with cloth. Sometimes I just need something like this to do I guess.

The best stuff I've ever used, and still do, is Mother's aluminum polish.
It will restore your oxidized Alcoas. The stuff Alcoa recommends is great
if you just want to touch up well cared for wheels. Very tedious to use
and it is a two stage process.

With all the talk here about the effort to get Alcoa wheels
looking good (and keep them that way), methinks I'll be glad
I bought the KMC XD-775 Rock Star (chrome) wheels!

Dan: I keep telling you to use a soft rag to apply in circular motion. Keep rubbin till it is black. let it dry. The blacker it gits the more it will shine when you wipe it off with a clean rag. There is directions on the bottle. Also available at truck stops. They also have a red acid prep for very badly oxidized alum. This stuff works on bare aluminum, not the newer "coated" alum wheels.

The stuff Chuck recommends looks good.
Just thought I would offer another alternative:
http://www.californiacustom.com/purple_metal_polish.html
Our shop at work, uses this to polish the semi wheels, stacks, bumpers, ect.. on the trucks at the shop.
our shop manager says it is the only thing he knows that works so well? I know they get some shiney trucks.
I did use it on some centerline jeep rims when I went to sell them. and it shined them up really nice.
the only thing is, they usually use a power buffer. we do not like to do things without tools!

I haven't tried the Purple metal polish, but I am going to try it. I
used to use a Alcoa product call PDQ Brightener Polish. It is no
longer available which is a shame because it worked great and I used
as the final polish out. I also use Turtle was when done to protect
the wheel.

I had my front 2 done when Ken was here to do my alignment. They looked awsome but the back looked like they had seen better days. I used Mothers and waxed them with MCGuires. Now that I have my air bag conversion done its time for the rears. Just in time to take a trip and get them dirty again.

Just finished shining wheels this afternoon. They are Alcoa Classics that were pretty dull - we've owned the coach only a year so I have no idea how long they have been neglected.
I used Busch Aluminum Wash - spray on/hose off. It contains mild acid a really cuts the crud but leaves a nasty looking finish. Followed with Busch Aluminum Polish - wipe on/wipe off. Looks like liquid car polish. The finish is awesome although I still have some streaks that look like water marks. There is a wax sealer coat that goes on next but I will skip that so I don't have to strip it next time I polish. Process is all by hand and takes about an hour per wheel on the coach.

If they are really bad some #0000 steel wool will clean them quick before you move to the final stages of polish. Works great on the machined insides of the wheel which you only see through the spokes too.

Once I get mine looking like new I will buy something to keep them looking that way so it is less of a job for me. I can only speak to what I have used. This stuff is good. I rub til the wheel is black and then rub off. My wheels are old so it works on them. The previous owner(s) did not take care of these wheels and I am paying the price. Next guy to run our coach down the road will not have to worry about dull wheels. Mine are not quite to where I would like to see them but they sure look better than when I got them.

Hal, it's no worse than the particles coming off the drums and rotors. Just make sure you clean them well afterward. most of the staining I removed with the wool was rust from the brake rotors and it was far quicker than polish.

Hi Guys -
Hope you don't mind me chiming in from the peanut gallery. I don't have aluminum wheels yet, but I am planning to polish the aluminum tub chassis on my Lola race car using the same procedure and tools they use to polish Airstream trailers. I wonder if the compound polishes and finish polishes they recommend would be worth trying to get your wheels back to their original shine? Here's a link:
