I've annotated and uploaded the Front Frame comparison photos. you can find
them here:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g6170-1974-1978-front-frame-comparison.html
If anyone needs the original HiRes un-edited photos, just let me know. I'll
try to email them to you.
I'm actually surprised that there are several differences that are easily
missed if you don't have samples side by side to compare.
The differences I noticed are:
- Upper rear suspension mount brackets
- Lower rear suspension mount brackets (various differences, including the
flat plate on early frame)
- Upper Suspension mounts attached further aft on frame
What I originally thought to be a difference in the shape of the "dog leg"
section of the front frames was merely an optical illusion caused by
lightling and poor angle of view. The main sections of the front frames are
visually identical with the above noted exceptions.
While taking photos, I scoured the front & rear frame clips as well as the
frame rails looking for a VIN. With all the online info stating where the
VIN is located, I was unable to find anything on the two frames I have. I'd
really like to see photo- documented evidence showing exactly where to
look. Perhaps the VINs will show up after I sandblast my good parts, but I
somehow doubt it.

Bill,
Ref some info you posted earlier (see below)
I decided to look a bit closer at the rear bogie frame and
crossmembers. Both of my bogie frames & crossmembers appear to be identical
in material thickness and placement/design of gussets. This corresponds
with your info as both coaches were built after June 14,1974.
I'm a little confused by the info mentioned later in your post that says:
"77Z (Sept. 76) Cross members changed again, reflecting those changes shown
in the above Operation Conquest.
I interpret this as suggesting that my bogie frames & crossmembers should
be different, which they are not.
Can you provide a bit more detail on this as I'm curious.
Thanks,
Les Burt

From Bill's earlier post:
Operation "Conquest"
June 14, 1974
Introduction of Eleganza II and change of GVW from 11,200 to 11,700.
3 major changes identified:
1- Frame bogie-liner assy new crossmembers made of special alloy steel
increased 50% in thickness. Suspension loads are evenly distributed
throughout the structurd by the addition of alloy steel crossmember gussets.
2- Rear suspension working members redesigned (1 1/2" pins), development
work began Nov. (1973), ended April (1974) after durability > testing.
3- larger wheel bearings.
Parts Books (printed Jan 1973 - May 1979)
The first parts book, Jan.73 already showed new P/Ns issued for all
crossmembers and all sections of the rear assembly section.
77Z (Sept. 76)
Cross members changed again, reflecting those changes shown in the above
Operation Conquest.
Front diaginal brace added at 5V100542
NOTE: TZEs prior to 5V100542 used a different P/N.
QUESTION: Do any of you with earlier coaches have a frame WITHOUT the front
digginal brace?
No further frame changes noted after the June 76 77Z. The Z78 parts book
shows the same P/N listing as the 77Z book.
