Hi Everyone !

I Love reading the digest and have learned a lot from all the friendly experts.

Dawn & I are getting our 77 Kingsley gussied up for her first trip (with us ?) to the GMCMI Amana convention in a few weeks. Thinking about replacing the plug wires. The PO has 8mm Silicone wires with white ceramic ends on the plug side. I do not know how old they are. I have never seen wires like this before. Are these unique to GMC motorhomes ?Are they preferable to the silicone booted ones ? We have a HEI coil on a 455.

Any advice would be appreciated....for all I know swapping out these ceramic beauties would be a downgrade (?)

See ya in Amana !

If it is running good, leave them along. 8MM wires with ceramic plug
end is just fine!

You might just pull each connection and check for any corrosion. Use a small ring of dielectric grease in each plug boot end. As soon as I am healthy I will be producing wire sets by the best vendor in USA that does all for NASCAR. Soon.

Dick Paterson makes a great set of plug wires for the GMC -- the ones I have seen have his name on the wires for identification, Springfield Ignition.

Mark,

Those ceramic spark plug caps are almost mandatory on Chevy 454's which
have the plugs buried near the exhaust manifolds (my 454's back in the 70's
& 80's had rubber boots surrounded by mica inside metal sleeves OEM). The
455 is MUCH easier on plug wires, but I can't think of any down side to
using those caps on it; I wouldn't change them.

See Y'All at Amana.

John,

Do you intend to sell completed (both ends) or one end unfinished?

Mark,

You may not have heard, but I worked in engine development and durability laboratories (Dyno Land) for way too long.

Those wires you describe are good ones. Unless you think that they have problems, leave them alone.

Not sure if they are good?
Get a sprizt bottle full of tap water, run the coach with the engine room hatch open and lay down a fog.....
Do you get a lightening show??
Something out of a 70's rock concert??
No? The wires are good - leave them alone.

Thanks Everyone with the advice about the spark plug wires. Matt's suggestion of water bottle light show is a good one ! I may save the money on new wires and get a Pink Floyd 8 track ! Gus the bus fired up just fine after replacing vacuum lines, radiator hoses, distributor cap and rotor. She purrs !

Sounds like Gus is ready to go. We are in Charleston, OR and after a jaunt to Depoe Bay, OR, Canada, North Dakota, etc. we will see many of you in Amana, including Gus the Bus. Safe journeys.
