I'm looking for a campground recommendation by Sewanee TN. Taking the family to see a W&L vs Sewanee game next weekend and I"m trying to find a spot relatively close by. Chatanooga is about an hour away, and I'd like to be closer than that. Unfortunately both the University and the local Chambers of Commerce have been less than helpful. Anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks,

Never understood the fascination with camp walmart. And with twin 9 month olds and a just under 3 year old, camp walmart is a bad plan. playgrounds, swimming areas, picnic tables, that's camping. asphalt strip mall? that's a last resort for a few hours rest.

Try Tims Ford State Park its 20 miles away. Next would be Manchester KOA 23 miles away.

Thanks Devin. Both of those are possibilities. Right now I'm thinking Winchester City Park is going to be my best bet. I just kept calling local Chambers of Commerce until I found one that might help. Had a good line on a place only a couple miles from the school, but they are hosting a motorcycle rally that weekend. With all the kids, that might be a bit noisy for my taste.

Lots of places according to Google:

http://lodging.uptake.com/camping/tennessee/monteagle/240180159.html

I know nothing about any of them but seem to recall several campgrounds near I24 at Mont Eagle which is only a few miles from the School. It's been a few years but I think there are a couple right there on the bluff.

Jeremy,

The low overnight camping fee! ;-)

What you don't want to run the risk of some moron running over your kids?

Easy in and easy out any time of the day or night. No reservations required and they are never full. I come and go as I please. Also if I decide I want something in the middle of the night I simply go and buy it. Usually they are much quieter than the beside the highway KOA's, etc. (Except in Gallup, New Mexico)

Because of Walmart's hospitality I buy almost everything on the road from them while I'm there.

I like the things they do locally for their clients like shaded parking for the Amish horses in Goshen, the reserved parking for seniors in Great Falls, and shaded parking for RVs in Zanesville.

Many have had problems with truck parking or local ordinances. I have found that if you go in and ask when they have signs up that most of them have alternate arrangements for RV's.

Examples:

Grand Junction said park down the street at Sam's Club. I'll call and tell them you are coming.

Cortez said, Oh we put the signs up because the city required it but they do not enforce them. Or you can also park down the street at our old store. We own that and there are no signs there.

Merrillvile, Ind. near me says yes you may park even though there are signs. The police will not bother you. They must check with us first. We had some problems with Semi-trucks parking.

Somewhere on the way to Oklahoma, I forget the city, had barriers up to prevent high vehicles. They made a special rear entrance for high RVs to allow them into the lot. Again it was a truck parking problem not an RV problem.

Fernly, NV (next to the Amazon warehouse) said: We love you RVers. You may park in our lot or directly across the street. We own that property also.

Walmart is an overnight stop, NOT a destination.

The Wal-Mart on the west side of OKC between Rockwell and MacArthur
(just north of I-40) has those barriers. I was told that you can
enter from the north side off Reno Avenue (parallel to I-40 about
four or five blocks north) where the delivery trucks enter. There's
almost a mile of "service" parking lots on the north side of the strip!

Still, it would be a good idea to ask, though.

I found one in Mont Eagle, but it's holding a motorcycle rally. They didn't know/wouldn't tell me, of any others. It's ok. I think the City Park in Winchester will work. Swimming and playgrounds within walking distance. For the little time we're going to be there, that's enough. Plus going up through Huntsville to Winchester will be different for us since we've never done the stretch from Huntsville north. We've made the run around Chattanooga a bunch of times.

swimming pools are very dangerous as well. drivers can control the cars to some degree. but take your eyes off a kid and wow, a pool is dangerous.

There's a KOA and a state recreation area in Manchester.  Never stayed in either myself.

Thanks to all who responded. For a variety of reasons we're going to try out Winchester City Park. I don't have high hopes for it being the nicest facility, but it does have a swimming pool and playground for the kids plus it's on our way and only 15 miles from the school.

Appreciate all the ideas.

Made the trip and the coach ran great. For those interested, Winchester City Park is an absolute dump. Disgusting bathhouse, there was no way to get level on the sites unless you brought feet worth of blocks, and the campground was no where near the other, very nice, amenities of the park. We spent an hour there before asking for our money back and moving on to Tims Ford State Park.

Tims Ford is a beautiful little campground. Pool was already closed, but you could swim in the lake. Bath house was about par for the course for a state park. Nice golf course if you're into that kind of thing. Bit out of the way, but isn't that what the GMC is for?

Anyway, we had a great trip. No trouble except the microwave needed to be swapped out in a Walmart parking lot. Coach made it "up the mountain" to Sewanee to see the Washington and Lee vs. University of the South Football game. Nice to see my alma mater win on the road. Drove "up the mountain" which was a 4 mile 7 degree grade in second without a hitch at 30-35 mph. Coming down boiled a bit of the brakes, but that seems normal for my coach no matter how gentle I am on them.

Biggest problem was the rain saturday. Made the drive up and down a bit more hairy than I'd like and the parking situation almost left us stuck in a muddy field.

Hope everyone had a great weekend, we sure enjoyed our first trip as a family of 5 in our GMC.

Thanks,
Jeremy Knezek
