G'day,

Thought I'd update our trip to date.

Haven't had any real problems with vapor lock since I adopted a policy of keeping both tanks as full as possible. The Onan is still
playing up. It starts and runs find for as long as an hour or so then it dies. I will play with it over the next few days. I assume
that "they" don't like it if you run it in an RV park.

What did we see between Frederick, CO and Casper, WY.

In Cheyenne we visited the Nelson Museum; it is a private museum owned by Mr. Nelson, a local attorney his collection of frontier
items. I was blown away by the number, diversity, quality, and presentation of the items in this museum; it was well worth the $3.00
entry fee (each) for seniors. Quite frankly it was BETTER than the Wyoming State Museum! It had a unique commentary system. You call
an phone number and as you walk from display to display you push 1#, 2#, 3# and so on and there's brief commentary on the display
you're looking at. We also visited the Wyoming State Museum, Wyoming State Capital and Governors mansion. Helen got the obligatory
fridge magnet and a couple of other items.

We headed for Fort Laramie but due to our consistent policy of getting started at the crack of noon we didn't make it very far and
we stopped at Wheatland. The next day we made it to Fort Laramie and spent a couple of hours wandering around the place. Fort
Laramie was important to the settlement of the west. It was on the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express. When we left Double Trouble we
fired up the Onan and turned the A/C on (it was 101F). As we wandered from building to building we could hear the Onan purring away.
I wanted to look at a few buildings that Helen didn't so she went back to Double Trouble. When I headed back I couldn't hear the
Onan any more. When I opened the door Helen told me that she was about three feet from the door when it died. Now I know what's
wrong - the Barbarian doesn't like Helen!

We headed back to I-25 and stayed overnight at a nice RV park in Glendo, WY. It's run by a husband wife team. The wife is a real
DRAGON! The place is 5 years old and it's the first RV park with a coin operated shower I've run into! As we got ready to leave I
noted that the golf cart the run around the place in had an air compressor in it. I walked into the office and noted I had a low
tire and if they could help me by inflating the tire. The Dragon lady told me to drive down to "Howards" - the local gas station.
Hubby said no problem he'd fire it up for me. Turns out that they run the place from April to November and head to Arizona for the
winter.

From there we headed to Casper, WY. We found a Sam's club and got gas for $3.32 which was $0.27 per gallon cheaper than anywhere
else. Across from Sam's there was a Bed Bath & Beyond where we found a bunch of stuff for Double Trouble that we just couldn't live
without! After that we headed to the Fort Caspar Museum and RV Park. I reckon we'll spend a couple of days here then we head for
Crow Agency, MT (Little Big Horn).

Time to call it quits for the day.

Below is a revised route plan.

Frederick, CO - Cheyenne, WY - Wheatland, WY - Laramie, WY - Casper, WY- Crow Agency, MT - Billings, MT - Devil's Tower, WY -
Deadwood, SD - Sturgis, SD - Regent, ND - New Salem, ND - Bottineau, ND - Dunseith, ND - Grand Forks, ND - Fargo, ND - Watertown, SD
- Sioux Falls, SD - Mason City, IA - Amana Colonies, IA - Kansas City, KS - Wichita, KS - Oklahoma City, OK - Quitman, TX - Houston.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
When you go to Sturgis, keep driving through. T trap. Head on up the
hill to lead and visit the Homestake gold mine. They used to let you take
the elevator down the Yates shaft. Helluva ride. Check out the Open Cut
and story behind it. Ask around if the Inferno Bar is still open.
Coolest place in SD to have a beer in the summer.

Just noted that your route in includes Kansas City.

You might be able to tour the Harley factory there! Worth investigating!

Rob - far be it from me to advise you on these coaches, but my 7kw Onan behave just like that bringing it back from Florida. Turned out to be fuel line crack or cracks in what looked like newer hose. And isn't there some adjustment for altitude as well?

Dan et al,

I read a review of a RV park in Abilene that went something like this; "nice park but the owners/manager act like they're doing you
a favor 'LETTING' you stay in their park." That's how the Dragon Lady struck me.

I didn't install the new fuel pump because Emery and I found the Pertronix had "failed." The coil is a new $100+ gen-u-ine Onan coil
that Tom Hampton installed two years ago. When we had the board out I noted that the push on spades weren't in the best of shape so
for step one I'm going to Radio Shack and buy enough 90° push on spades to replace them all. I'm going to disconnect and clean every
other electrical connection and re-install them with dielectric grease. Once that's done I know all the connections are good. The
next thing I'll do is swap coils (I have another $100+ gen-u-ine Onan coil (I have no idea how I wound up with it). If that doesn’t
solve the problem I'll try the fuel pump.

If that doesn’t solve it I am in contact with the guy that has the used Honda in Houston! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

Mac,

Been to Sturgis a couple of times; first time was in my Dad's VW Westphalia Camper, second time was with HOG HK.

Steve is right, it's a zoo but it is FUN!

Rob,

Your last post answered the question I was going to ask. As you know, I was having the same symptoms from my Onan. I found that I had spark, and my gas lines are all new so, on the advice of a SOB friend (not him personally), I replaced the fuel pump with one I got from Jim K.

My friend has another friend, that was having the same problem with the Onan in his SOB. He had it to the local Onan shop and they tried several things to get it to keep running. It kept dieing after running for a period of time, anywhere from an hour to two hours. They had a used fuel pump lying around, so they swapped it out. Problem solved. It has ran flawlessly ever since.

If you have the fuel pump, why not put it in first and save yourself a lot of potential aggravation. It certainly won't hurt to do the other things you mentioned, but the fact that you tested the fuel pump at Marc's place and got NO pressure out of it, when hot, points to a problem with the pump, to me.

Just noted that your route in includes Kansas City.

You might be able to tour the Harley factory there! Worth investigating!

Steve,

The Sturgis Motorcycle rally was August 6-12 so the hoopla is over. We'll drop in to see if we can find any bargain souvenirs. I
also enjoy visiting the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame; they've got some beautiful bikes there. I would love to have a
1946 Indian Chief and a 1946 Harley Knucklehead!

The Homestake gold mine sounds interesting, we're in!

Will toast you and Nancy at the Inferno Bar!

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob,
When you go to Sturgis, keep driving through.

Steve

I would not do any of this till the Onan runs like you want it to.

then do these things to keep it running

often change brings new problems

yes there are 2 capacitors,( condensers) one across the points, and one
across the coil . -different functions-

Gene,

Sequence of actions on Onan:

1) remove and replace all the 90° connectors on the control board
2) fire it up and see how long it runs
3) remove and replace the condenser
4) fire it up and see how long it runs
5) remove and clean all the rest of the connections on the Onan
6) fire it up and see how long it runs
7) remove and replace the fuel pump
8) fire it up and see how long it runs
9) remove and replace the coil
10) fire it up and see how long it runs
11) yank out the Onan, pour gas over it and light it!
12) install Honda

I assume when you say "capacitor" do you mean the "condenser" that is attached to the points?

JimB sent me the late model points and condenser off an Onan he had removed, the points were REALLY clean and shiny therefore I
assumed that they were rather new and since I always change the points and condenser together I assume it too was new.

Regards,
Rob M.

Rob -

Instead of the dielectric grease, I'd use some Caig deoxit (red can) which leaves a pretty good protective film and dopesn't attract as much dirt and crud as grease will.

If that doesn’t solve it I am in contact with the guy that has the used Honda in Houston! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.

Dragon Lady??? I am laughing so loud I am afraid I will wake Teri up.
So, what in the world are you thinking about the Onan? All that work and you still have same problem you started with? You and Emery
missed something, or so it seems. Carl S. had a similar problem. I hope his new fuel pump cured it. Didn't seem to help your's. Did
you swap out the coil?
Have fun. Hope you meet no more Dragon Ladies.
Gasoline in Detroit is 4.09. What a mess. Glad we got the new, fuel sipping, car.
Dan
