~ Onan Starter Question ~

Today I serviced the '78 Eleganza II
Oil & Filter Change
Lubeed Chassis
Tranny Fluid & Filter Change
Flushed the cooling system and added coolant
Then I changed the oil in the 6 K BARBARIAN
I started the '403 and when the temp was normal
I shifted thru the Tranny, Put it in park and
enguauged the Dash A/C system.

With the Engine Idleing I walked back To Start
the Onan
As I Pressed The Buttuns To Start It
I Could Hear The Starter And It Sounded As If
Itb Was Not Enguaging, just a spinning noise ~

aNY sUGGESTIONS ?

My guess - since I just went through this - is that the starter bracket has cracked.

I replaced the starter motor because when I looked at the bracket I thought it was okay. After installing the new motor it cranked no better. I already had the new bracket collecting dust in my garage. Once I put it on the ONAN cranked perfectly.

Oh - and if you remove the flywheel be certain to put it back on at the proper torque - 35lbs I think.

The shaft is conical and will crack the flywheel.

Don't ask.

I read on here awhile back that if your Onan drags a little when you first pull it out on the slides or bumps when nearly slid back in that the motor mounts have sagged and the dragging/ bumping is the starter bracket. If left uncorrected the bracket will fail from the interference. If you haven't done so maybe replace the mounts if you are having to replace the starter bracket.

Joe,

The starter gear did not engage in the flywheel.

Pull the Onan out and look up underneath and see what you can see.

If everything looks copasetic put your hand on the starter solenoid (cylinder mounted on the starter that runs parallel to the axis
of the starter that a bunch of wires are connected to) and hit the start button again.

You should hear and feel it CLICK as it forces the starter gear into the flywheel teeth.

Regards,
Rob M.

Also check the mount donuts. It may be resting on the starter motor as the donuts may have crushed. Someone said to stick your finger in the hole on the front to see if you can touch the flywheel??

Just a heads up... if you put your finger straight in the hole of the front panel it should touch the flywheel bolt. As the mount cushions compress the bolt will be lower than the hole. The front cover is bolted to the onan frame and does not move, the onan is mounted to the frame with rubber mounts that compress from the weight and gravity pulls it down.
BE SURE THE ONAN IS NOT RUNNING! when you put your finger in the hole. Shocked

Replacement generator mounts are available from M&D Mower on the Web. You need 4. Very easy replacement job, only one (top right hand) requires much thinking about how it is replaced. They do carry many Onan parts, at friendly, non-cummings prices.
I suggest supporting the generator with blockage to keep it up at the near correct level, and replace one at a time. 440 pounds of Onan are tough to handle, even with help.
JmK is your easy source for the starter bracket, other vendors do have them.

This is good information. If the Onan drags when one pulls it out, replace the rubber mounts. "Make sure Onan is not running when you stick your finger in the hole". I like that warning too. With lots of information gathered from Carl S. I did my mounts a couple of months ago, but no pictures. So, maybe I did it or maybe Teri did it. You decide. Laughing
