Can't find camping convenient to Chicago. So am considering staying in hotel and renting a car for a few days.
Need suggestions for and SAFE place to park and reasonably priced or hotel/motel not too far out of the city..
Thanks for your help.

Our group has had rallies at the Casino in Joliet and they have an RV
campground and hotel if necessary. This was the best for visiting
Chicago. Drove into town in car and toured.

Same option as I gave you before. Park in Valparaiso. There are are the Courtyard, Hampton, Fairfield, and several others right there next to the university. Rent a car from Hertz or Enterprize. Again you can park an RV for free at the Airport and both Hertz or Enterprize will rent you a car there.
I personally would ride the train. I spent many, many years doing both (train and driving). Parking ain't cheap in Chicago and they drive like idiots in Chicago. It was $21.00 to park at Navy Pier last time I was there. That rate was the same for 1/2 hour or all day. It's probably higher now. I heard it is now $25.
If you are driving in Chicago be careful where you go. The interstates and Lake Shore Drive are OK. There are some areas I would never wander in to. Ask a local before you go. There were 7 people shot there last weekend in separate incidents and I never saw it in the paper. Downtown is fine just do not wander south of 12th street or very far west. North bound is OK.
You also could stay in Chesterton, In. Much closer to the train and some of the hotels would probably give you a ride to the Chesterton/Dunes Park train station. Everything is a safe area in either Chesterton or Valparaiso. If fact, anywhere in the county is fine day or night.
Go here to generate a train schedule. You want Dunes Park to Millennium Station.

Not sure if you are still looking for information for Chicago - but you can go anywhere in the outskirts and catch a train. Schaumburg and the suburbs have several nice hotels. There is a lot to see just within walking distance.
The parks are lined up so you can go from one park to another. Not sure if they have the jazz music festival going on right now or not. It's really nice.
There are also several good restaurants around. Be sure to try an Italian beef if you have never had one. Mmmmmmm. You also have got to try a Chicago dog. If you ask around any local can tell you where they are located. Wish I could name some of them. Lived there several years ago - but you know how places change.
Good luck and enjoy Chicago.

Debbie,
Modified your and Ken B's advice.
Stayed in Countryside and rented a car. Did't cost much more than public transit. Except for the parking. But I could go where I wanted when I wanted.
Lived too long in California; where there is no public transit.
