Currently in Gas City, Indiana with a bad ps pump in a 76 GMC.
Too late tonight to call people. Already irritated one person by calling a wrong number listed on the Black List.

Could do it my self; but this time I would prefer to find a shop that will replace the pump while I rent a car and go do some more interesting things.

Can drive to wherever- difficult but doable. Any suggestions?
Lraning toward Larry Dilk's recommended shop in Greenfield. That wasa the wrong cell phone number.

Oh, I hate that Gary. We came thru Gas City about 4 pm EST today. Was headed to Romeo, Mi. from the FMCA convention in Indy. There are some north Indiana folks on here that may very well give you some help with information by morning. If you get it in a shop, and rent a car, you might want to run down to the fair grounds in Indy and spend a day at the convention. Always fun looking at new items that have come out recently for motorhoming.
Keep us informed of your progress.
Dan

Gary, I get into less trouble this way. No one up to argue with me except Ken Burton and Gene Fisher. Very Happy
Today was a long day for us in the Board Meeting at FMCA. We cut a trail north on 69 as soon as we could leave, about 3 pm. I looked to the west of the interstate at Gas City but could not see much. Sometimes I stop there for gas but this new hybrid is getting over 50 mpg so no gas needed when passing through there today.
I will check on you here in the morning. Hope some of the locals come around early for help. I am not sure where that pump can be bought but someone will show up with information for you. Jim K. is the fastest shipper I have ever seen.

That is a standard "P Series" Saginaw Pump. You should be able to find one in any corner store. Just check the fittings.
The are on millions of GM trucks from 4.3 V-6 to C/K series.

You have a lot of options. listed by Distance.

I am not listing area codes intentionally

The first two Dick and Larry are area codes of three one seven
Blaine is area code seven six five
Tony and Ray are area code five seven four
Irv is area code two six oh
I am area code two one nine

Dick Groves in Nobelsville 773-3332 501-2161
Larry Dilk in Indiananpolis 862-4110 590-3200
Blaine Merrell in Bainbridge 522-3241
Tony Partridge in Logansport 722-3871 721-4911
Ray Swartzendruber in Syracuse 457-3964 457-6448
Irv Troyer in Lagrange 463-2247 350-2666
Me (Ken Burton)in Hebron 988-4547

I tried to list them by distance.

If you do not find any one closer, call me. I'll come out there. It is 142 miles for me. Blaine might have a used pump around. You are about 100 miles from Blaine.

Other than that we would have to find one. I did not look up the part number so I do not know it's availability.

I assume you will need a pulley puller to install a new one. I have one here but they are less than $15.00 at Harbor freight.

Ken,
Thanks to you and all others for the suggestions.

I had already checked locations of the Indiana Black List members.

Since I don't want to do the work my self even with help; I was hoping for a rec for a local shop.

I decided to spend the night here in Gas City and see if any shop here would do the job.

Bo's Auto Service opened at 8:00. They will have the part here by 1:00 and I should be on my way.

Expect the rest of the trip to be trouble free.

Gene,
Could have but I have ~2000 miles to go. Thought it might be best to fix it and replace all the belts while it apart.

Found a shop this am about 1/2 mile from where the pump failed that is doing the job. Pump is off- The shaft has broken loose from the gear. Waiting fo Napa to deliver new pump.

This is great news Gene. Let us know how things went when you have time. I wish I had known you were in Gas City yesterday. Teri and I would have stopped to hang out with you. I could have done the pump for you.

Thanks to all for suggestions.

Got the new ps pump installed- works great- even steers easier than before the old one failed.

Shop that did the r&r was:

Bo's Auto Service- East main street- Gas City, Indiana-
Not that ps pump replacement is that complicated; but were WILLING to tackle the GMC.

I recommend them if any one needs help in that area.

Left Gas City about 4:30 and made it to Oak Lake Campground in Fair Oaks off I65 south of Hobart, Indiana for the night.
Nice quiet place with good shaded sites.

Not much else in the area.

Is cutting the V-belt a standard roadside option?

Any reason (or situation) we should not do that?

Thanks!

I can't see where cutting the V-belt would have helped in this situation. The PS pump is driven by two belts. If you cut them both, you would loose the alternator as well. Cutting the short, main belt to the PS pump would still leave the pump driven by the belt that goes on around the alternator pulley. You could always cut both belts, fire up the Onan, jumper the boost solenoid, and proceed on Onan power, but that would be an emergency only procedure.

That's a wonderful presentation on the belts, but...even if you cut the PS belt, it is still being driven by that 1/8 wrap of the alternator belt.

Am I wrong?????

YES AND NO IIRC it depends if you have a double alternator pulley or not.

Double pulley...single pulley...it makes NO difference. The power steering pump is driven by two different belts. Cut one, and the other still drives it. If you want to get the alternator out of the system, you can do that if you have a single alternator pulley, and still have a functioning PS pump. But the Power steering pump will be driven as long as there is a belt going to the alternator, even without it's own dedicated belt. Granted; the PS pulley will only be driven by 1/8 of a wrap of the alternator belt, but it is still being driven. Look at Gene's PDF on the belts again and it will be obvious. If it is not, here is a pic of my belts with the double alternator pulley (which works very well, thank you!) to illustrate it better:

I have the same setup as you and according to the experts, it is WRONG! With the OEM setup, you can come home on one belt driving the waterpump, no matter what you loose. PS pump, alternator or AC. With our setup, you can not.
SO IT DOES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE.
