ok, I started installing the MSD Atomic when they 1st came out, i think if my count is right, yesterdays install on mr Fin Bevens GMC is #9, and one on the lift 1/2 way done is #10.
I installed these on a test trial with 2 free units from MSD, wow, nice set up and works so well the customers actually purchased them and did not want to return them.
I like to test things out before selling them, i run them hard, for example, yesterday, me and Gene Barrows took Fins out for the learn drive and at 60 MPH, vac is at 15/16 inch, tenps cool and oil pressure 40 psi, at 60 mph, you step on it and 70 is there far before you know it, passing a truck is no problem, you can actualy fell yourself being pushed back in the seat when you step on it, no, not like a Z06 or a ZR1, but you do feel it and notice it.
I even raced a toyota prius on an on ramp , up hill and beat her, hahaha, i am sure she was not even trying but, it was fun, my point being, these work good, in fact, far better than the exsisting units out there, i remove a current unit being sold and was taken aback when i saw how the adapter plate was centered over the intake but i will say , it looked like 50 % was blocked by the original intake, wow, and we seem to worry about mandrel bends for the exhaust, hmmmmmmmmm
The 9 i have set up so far, i have run as non return set ups, with the stock HEI and vac advance, I have worked a bit with MSD, and i have never ever had a problem calling them when i needed to get tech help, just call the #( 9 1 5 ) 8 5 7 - 5 2 0 0, the push 1, 1, 1, and that gets you to tech for the msd side and those guys there are very frendly.
Those who want the man. online, just sned me an email (mokingo@hotmail.com) and i'll send it to you, mine is in color so you can see where ever colored wire goes, so simple, the only thing you need to do is set up the "IAC", but once thats done, button it up, leave the controler plugged in and drive it for about 30 to 40 miles in learn mode and thats really it.
No, it does not take 4 hours to install, in a gmc, trust me, it takes longer, but all in all, good unit and i would rather spend my money on it than the current stuff out there.
Someday, I toooooo will become a GMC guru, where as, i will hear, i talked to Miguel and he says it works fine, (Sorry Steve F, i love ya), hahaha, so, for the mean time, i will continue testing and trying new things and just let the cat out of the bag as she will.
Once again, if any one wants on, please allow Jim K to sell it to you, this keeps his shop storng and alive, and we all need Jim K,
there have been a few things I tried to market in the past, ie" eagle wheels" and not one I could sell, i gave it to Jim K, and sells them like hot cakes, hmmmmmmmmmmm, so please, if anyone is interested in the MSD ATOMIC and you want to purchase it, call JIM K, please.
As for the cost, look, it really comes complete with the exception of the adapter plate from square bore to spread bore, and yes, you will have to dog house up about 1 1/2 inch, but if you cannot step up one more 1 1/2, then don't get it, stick to what ya got, but trust me, after installing 9 so far, it is to me, the way to go.
Thanks for listening and sorry for any mistakes on my spelling, hahaha, jim k calls me his brother so, my eyes have actually start to slant some, damn JAP.
Once again, thank to all and happy motoring in your GMC's

MSD Atomic is a stand alone, aftermarket fuel injection system. Their web page makes it sound quite interesting and seems to have a wide variety of applications.

Gee, Gary, until a few days ago, I thought a MSD was a Marine Sanitation Device.

Miguel is referring to the Atomic 1 EFI system by MSD
http://www.msdignition.com/products/atomic/<http://www.msdignition.com/products/atomic/>. This is basically a plug and
play TBI system for any V8. The nice thing about it is that all of the
external sensors are mostly contained in the throttle body housing
eliminating the need for lots of extraneous wiring. It's a very clean
installation. You program it by a hand held device and you basically punch
in your parameters. No EPROMS to burn. You can;t get as detailed with your
engine setup as you can with the EBL but then again you might not want to.
Sounds like Miguelito has it dialed in. Nice to do a drag race between the
Howell with the EBL and the Atomic to see who wins. I'll race my 23 with the
Howell/EBL against Fin Bevens 26 with the Atomic.

The PO for my beast did a motor rebuild and put on the complete edelbrock top end kit:cam, heads, high manifold, performer carb. roller rocker arms, Does this unit lend itself to this type of setup? My ignition is the stock points dist, with mallory upgrade no HEI or computer.Motor cover already 4 inches higher. NO matter how much I work with the carb it always seems rich especially at idle and lean in midrange and if I richen up the midrange you can hear the motor just won't seem to smooth out and the other tach known as the fuel gauge shows it.. I've heard not to look for better milage but as black as my exhaust pipe runs I beleive it can only help. I guess the EFI on my regular vehicles has spoiled me, I grew up as most of you with either manual chokes or having to set the auto choke when the motor was cold. Just poking around for thougts and ideals on EFI. conversion.

Fin,
I saw it at the SEMA show a while back and went through a whole demo on it.
It looks really good. Be interested to see if you get an mpg increase.

It will be interesting. For me, the real test will be the climb on I-5, up from the Bakersfield side to Gorman. Even with my 3.7, I'm in 2nd gear doing 40 - 45 most of the way up that hill now. And I have a relatively light 26.
And to my recollection, a trip up 120 from Lee Vining to Tioga has been in 3rd gear, doing maybe 25.
Hoping for the best with this "upgrade", and trusting in Miguel.
Fin.

if you bring it to my shop, it will pass smog, other shops will fail it as a visual, our smog shop obly wants a clean burning tail pipe, don't care how it is done, just that it burns clean.
Now, if you decide to take it on your own to our smog shop, he will fail you, however, if i am there with you, bingo

I saw it at the SEMA show a while back and went through a whole demo on it.
It looks really good. Be interested to see if you get an mpg increase.

As with most fuel injection systems, most likely you will not see a noticeable improvement in MPG... unless you are replacing something that is badly out of tune. If you want a "noticeable" improvement in MPG, you'll want to try a Computer-Controlled Distributor. Granted the MPG improvement still will not pay for the upgrade... at least very soon.
Does anyone KNOW if the MSD Atomic is capable of integrating with a Computer-Controlled Distributor? I suspect not, but there are other reasons to go to fuel injection.
I like the integrated look of the MSD unit. I can see how it could "slip past" the visual inspection at DEQ. It LOOKS like a carburetor.
