Studebaker Museum in South Bend. But Indiana isn't exactly on the way from
Chicago to New Orleans.

You can't beat the Lincoln Museum and Presidential Library in Springfield,
IL.
From there head to St. Louis or on south through Illinois.
The Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY is fascinating.
Drive the Natchez Trace Parkway trough some of Tennessee starting just
southwest of Nashville into Mississippi.
Or, head to Memphis for BBQ and Graceland if you want to bypass getting to
Nashville.
Take in some Civil War history at the battlefield in Vicksburg.
Several things to do in New Orleans.

I have to second Byron's suggestion of running the Natchez trace National Parkway.

A very good over night spot is the Corp of Engineers Piney Grove Campground in Mississippi.

Full hookups on the lake front are $7.50 per night if you have a National Parks pass. Otherwise it is $15.00. Nice clean showers and a free dump station.

Blaine and Diane plus Laurie and I ran the trace on the way home from the GMCMI rally in Patterson, Louisiana in the spring of 2011. I first ran it at Roger Black's suggestion coming back from in 2007 from the GMCMI Rayne, Louisiana rally.

Certainly agree on the Nachez Trace Parkway. Beautiful drive. If you're going through Indianapolis, I enjoyed the Indianapolis 500 track and museum. Lots of famous winning cars and you can take a tour on the track. There's a National Geographics book of Scenic Drives in the US. We made an effort to get on those when we were anywhere near them. A very useful travel tool.
Enjoy your trip.

If you get through the Auburn and Ft. Wayne area you have to see the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Museum - it is a must see. Must be one of the top few auto musuems in the country.

There is also a nice classic car museum in Tupelo, MS. Has one of the few Tuckers on display. Just of the Natchez Trace. Tupelo is also a good place to get gas. One of the "cheap" spots in the state. Do not fill up in Vicksburg - gas is as much as 25 cents a gallon higher than the rest of the state. Gas is also cheaper in Jackson and Hattiesburg, MS. I do not know prices in the Gulf area.

There are TWO Tuckers on display in the Napa valley. One is at Inglenook winery in Rutherford and one is in The Francis Ford Coppola winery in Geyserville. Both look great and where in the making of the movie "Tucker".

For at least half a day and better a day and night, skip the freeway and hit the Great River Road.  Chester MO is a good crossing point.  Or Cape Girardeau.  I grew up in the 50s, the little MO and IL and AR towns look mighty familiar.  Little has changed.  And I neve got a bad meal at a local joint along the Road.

If you're a fan (like my wife is) check out Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo There is a nice park/museum/gift shop, along with the house he was born in and the church he attended and learned to sing at, moved there from a location down the street.

AAh . . Chester, IL Been there, Done that, Did not want the shirt. Home of Menard State pen. I was there back when they had John Wayne Gacey. I spent some time there as a guest - consultant. Fun place to visit. Three foot thick stone walls, big iron doors with mechanical locks, and huge keys. That place was built some time in the 1800's.

I do not think they give tours but it is a real education if you ever get to visit inside. At the time I visited there was 3 sections. Menard, Menard Psychiatric, and Menard Maximum where they kept Gacy. I never actually saw Gacy himself but the COs told me lots of stories. There was also trustee convicts going in and out of the front gate on their to go farming every day.

It is a neat place to visit but you do not want to stay overnight. Instead continue on down the river road. If you go far enough south you might run into Dan G.

I am from around there, dog walk is a town up the road there about 350 people when i was there in the 60's.

Once picked up a hitch hiker going to marion ill. to see his daddy on his death bed. He stated he worked in the maid rite in chester ill.

He said his father wrote i walk the line for johnny cash, he stated to me his favorite song of his daddies was I will let you next to my wallet again.

I ripped it off and wrote one about a man put in jail on christmas and his x wife was in the cell next to him in a small town and they got back together.

real story.

On my list to look at!  I cross at Chester cos my co-breeder of BWDs lives in central MO, Chester being the closest crossing.  Supposedly, they're putting a new bridge in.  The old one is/was a fun ride in a GMC.

Armand,

I do believe all of us that have been to the ACD museum would say it is a
"must see" for a car enthusiast. I was impressed, even, by the cars built
in Indiana portion of the exhibit. However, that's not real close to
Chicago or on the way to NO. It is a great stop when within 60 miles.

On of these fall days I want to make it to the Auburn rally. It's quite a
deal.

If you decide to take the Eastern route, there is lots to see in Nashville. Further south on I65 in Huntsville is the Space and Rocket Center. Not too many places that have some of the real space hardware that the Center has. They've also just reopened the NASA tours for the first time since 9-11.

Huntsville WAS the birthplace of the US space program until LBJ got pissed because Alabama didn't vote for him and moved NASA to Houston.

And if you\re going South on I 65, stop off in Birmingspam at the Schloss Furnace and have a look at how steel used to be made.    Good places to eat on the way.... Smokey Hollw Restaurant - Thorsby exit, turn right on the right.   Uncle Mickey's - Downtown Prattville, take a right at the third (main street) Prattville exit, in the middle of downtown (five miles maybe) on the right... and while you're in downtown P'ville have a look at Continental Gin Company (Currently Continental Bush Hog I think), Danny Pratt's original factory for making cotton gins in this country.  We all used to work there in the summertime when we were in school.
